well i've just split my first 2000 engine and survived! i have another here as well!

am i right in saying this engine started in 1996?

i was pleasantly suprised at how similar it is to the 2001 - 2008 model engine.

what i would like to do is build up a picture of all the mechanical side to this engine so that although it's an earlier engine you would refer to 2001 - unless otherwise stated!

i see that the differences between the two are small at this point. enough toi handle in perhaps a chapter on mechanicals and one on 'the rest'!

i see the differences as being:

the tensioner blade
the camwheel is alloy
it has a berrel
no oil pressure to the big end or head.

what have i missed? ok thee specs may change but this appears to be the main difference?

Hi Taffy,
I have a 1997 sales brochure in front of me stating all that is NEW with the engine separating it with the 96' .

Here's the list:

NEW for 1997 (engines)

• valve guides (all models)
• camshafts (all models)
• rockerarms (all models)
• valve adjustment screws (all models)
• fully automatic decompression system, all
• freewheel mechanism (all Elduro & FX)
• counterbalancers, including intermidiate transmission on all models (I assume E-start models?)
• crankshafts on all 400 and 600 Elduro and FX models
• crankcases, all models
• oil pump/lubrication system, all
• oilfilter system, all (inlet washable, outlet replacable)
• oil drain plug
• clutch springs, all
• clutch pressure plate, all
• shift drum, all
• shift mechanism, all
• exhaust system, all (including spark arrestor for US models)
• carburettors on all 501 & 600 models

There ya go!

log :D

I would surmise that the 1997 -2000 motors were kissing cousins. Most notable was the addition of the oil pump and oil filter.

I would then group the 1988-1996 motors together as they did not have the oil pump and filter.

The only other stand out would be the introduction of the e-start in 95 or 96. Some say 95 1/2.

Most of all other year to year updates were minor in comparison.

I think :?

hi, indeed 1997~2000 engines are basically the same.
basically 2000 introduced new valve seat material , rockers with an offset to the lubrication hole , conical valve springs(from 1999), 2 stage ignition with a 7-8 hp difference between hi and low, hydraylic clutch, exhaust systems (arrow titanium for mx models), anodised clutch cover and waterpump cover, drilled gear selector and some minor things i miss..

aah! oyk! just the man! the man who was going to do all this.... if you have anything written up so far then please feel free to let me have it. so far the posts here have been very useful and i'll try and put it in some order sometime.

but you guys have got to promise me that you'll look into the chapter for this 'time' and tell me when i'm right or wrong?

i have a 31/27 head here that has steel seats i think, and another that has 35/27 and they look like phospher bronze?

regards

Taffy

new seat material introduced in 2000,
