use the dead stop method. put it in a search.
finding top dead centre using the dead stop method.
I have a bit of stud here, that means threaded rod thast is all rod, no shank, no head OK? I push it in the hole and lock it over to one side so it hooks into the bottom thread of the spark plug hole. I then bring the piston up on the slywheel using a 17mm STEPPED ring spanner. you must control the flywheel against the valve springs!
don't crash into the stud. just tap it and then mark the flywheel with a thin tipped felt-tip pen. then go the other way. you learn very quickly that you're stopping the piston too far down so bring the stud up. in the end, when the two marks are 40-60mm apart it is easy to disect the middle of the two marks, wope the others away. you have TDC.
there's a mark on the crankcase at about 10 o clock on the interface of the cases to the ignition cover.
I don't like using it but it is there. I prefer my own mark under the top ignition cover bolt hole.
