180 Degrees out???

Hey guys,

I posted earlier that I couldn't fit a feeler gauge in for my valve check. This all came after removing the camshaft and sprocket to replace the sprocket (goodbye aluminum sprocket... hello steel).

I was very meticulous in my work but is it possible to put the camshaft 180 out? Its a single cylinder which leads me to believe that it is NOT possible to do that but here are my symptoms:

1. My exhaust and intake valves are unloaded at the same time ONLY after the exhaust valves close while cycling the engine through its 4 strokes with the kick start lever.
- My understanding was that this should happen only after the intake stroke

2. After my exhaust valves close the piston does a full "up and down" cycle (down all the way then up all the way) before the intake valves are compressed.
- I thought that was what was supposed to happen after the intake valves were enganged (intake valves open, piston goes up for the compression stroke, down for the power stroke, up for exhaust stroke right?)

3. When turning the engine (cycling it through the 4 strokes) via the kickstart lever the exhaust valves engage IMMEDIATELY after the intake valves close. After the exhaust valves close (as mentioned in number 2 above) the piston cycles up and down again before the intake valves are opened.

I may have just looked at this for too long and begun second guessing myself but it seems as though the intake valves are opening when the exhaust valves should and the exhaust valves are opening when the intake should... aka functioning backwards. This leads me to believe that my cam is in 180 degrees off. I just didn't think that was possible with a 1 cylinder engine.

Any thoughts... my brain is failing to work properly at this point!

OK..... I get your reply now :)

I am absolutely ******** and have been working on WAY too many things lately :)

As I stared at the back of the engine (the intake valves) I somehow thought.... "hmmmm back of the engine.... that is where exhaust goes!" WRONG!

I'm not sure what broke loose in my brain but my timing is fine. I was just too tired to realize. All is well. Valves are adjusted now that I've come back to my senses and see that the intake is towards the back and the exhaust is towards the front.

I promise I do know how to work on an engine... I just spaced this morning for some reason :)

i hate leaving a reply to a thread only to later read that the poster has started a new thread on the same subject :x

Hey yo Austinbro..... Welcome to the sight..... sorry for the crap reply (bit of a slow reply as the network at work fell over last night after my initial reply) , I thought about many different reply's as I was not sure you were for real from your symptoms...... hadn't sussed your confusion by then..... well done on a positive result.
I shall try and moderate my reply's in future...
