lads, I haven't had any luck finding a reasonably priced ktm for sale. I did locate a low hours FE 501 and I'm considering, is anyone here familiar with them? Couple things I'm nervous about..

1) bike had a new top end at 30 hours due to burning oil. The owner says this was also an issue with his 500 xcw. I can't find much literature on it but I was counting on this bike being pretty reliable and not needing a top end touched in the 200 hour range.

2) finding parts in the future, since husaberg is being phased out. Particularly I'm worried about the plastic subframe when it's time for a replacement, and fitting an aftermarket gas tank. Has anyone seen or owned these bikes side by side? Are the frames identical? IE fit an aluminum subframe later on, plastics, etc?

I used to own a 570, sold it cause it was heavy and a PITA to work on. I'm worried about the plastic subframe on the 501 holding weight for camping trips. Would also like to put on a bigger tank for dualsporting.

During the Libya Rally I saw a 501 with large KTM fuel tank. So that is not a problem. Luggage I do not know. Isn't there a rule that spare parts must be available a lest 10 years?
Bought a rear mudguard for my 2010 570 without any problem.

Minus the sub frame everything will be the same parts wise between the 2... and the new husky uses the plastic sub frame. Or consider it the exact same as the new husky but pds. .. parts shouldn't be a problem. Can't say on reliability... but I wouldn't think they would be any different.

Geographic void is right,

Parts availability is a non-issue, especially with the Huskys continuing to use the same parts.

Reliability? As far as I have heard, and seen, they are bullet proof. Shoot, my valves aren't even out of spec, now on my second summer on the bike!

That being said, any bike THAT modern and new that has already required a rebuild under normal use, Id steer clear of.

There are too many other bikes out there to settle on a lemon. Hey, just go with the new Husqvarna if no KTM's are available? ;)

Regards

thanks, you're right my gut is telling me something is lemoney with this bike, maybe the guy hasn't figured out how to seat his airfilters properly.
