12 teeth on new FE 570 or others

Any body running a 12 tooth front sprocket on a new FE 570? I want a lower first and want to drop off 2 teeth on the rear but do not know if a 54 will fit with the chain guide, so I'm thinking a 12/50 would work, but it looks like it will wear the s/arm slider quickly. Anybody tried this? and if so how's it holding up?
Which way to go??

I am running 12/52 with no problems. I can still do 90+MPH (indicated) on the pavement (on 8PSI knobbies!), so you still have plenty of top end unless you are racing in the desert or something like that.

No problems with anything rubbing anything. I thought about a 54 or even 56 on the rear, but they are not easy to find and I don't think they will fit with the stock chain guide (and so I have been told too).

I am happy with that gearing. For the same RPM (by feel - no tach), it seems I lost about 10MPH on pavement, but it is nice in tight technical single track for my style of riding (very slow). With the Rekluse I didn't really have problems with the 13, except that I was idling along faster than I sometimes wanted to. I wanted the option of going as slow as I could, and now I am not fighting the bike so much. I suck at off-road riding, but this makes it easier for me.

Three other people have ridden the bike, and all called it a "Tractor" and none complained about the gearing being too low.

YMMV - literally.

I run 12/52 on my FX450 in the tight stuff. The FX 1st gear is taller than an FE 2nd gear though.

33.76 doesn't sound right but ok. something is up because they have changed the ratios of all the gears consistently so that it must be the primaries that they changed.

Here is a scanned copy from the owners manual Taffy. Hope it is readable.
I am not sure about all these ratios but the 570 is unreal to ride, 1st seems plenty low enough to chug up hills and the thing just pulls like no tomorrow through the next few gears.

that didn't come through.

check the owners doc under race tuning and you'll see all the ratios of the old bikes going right back to 1989. all the primary gear ratios have always been the same.

careful note of each gear (yours are in order, THEY are written from left to right) shows a 2 tooth change in the lower gears. so a primary ratio change is the only other way this can all stack up.

this is only for sheetshooten of course....

It is what I took out of the owner's manual along with the other ratios. May not be gospel, but the only thing I have to work from.

The only thing I calculated in my other thread was the final/final (all ratios against 13/52 sprockets).

12/52 gearing on the FE570 is way too low. 12/52 gearing on a big bore all purpose bike like the FE570 would certainly limit its maximum potential. 12/52 would be OK if all you rode was tight, technical single track however the 570 is not designed to be restricted to these conditions. The 450 and especially the 390 would be better for these tight conditions anyway.

Not everybody wants to use the 570 to its 'maximum potential'. I find no place where I need to go 100+MPH on my bike, yet I have plenty of places where I want to crawl along real slow in first.

Now part of that is because I am a poor rider and in poor physical shape, but once I went to a 12 tooth front sprocket I found that I wasn't struggling as fast to keep up with the bike on really tight technical trails (yes, putting along in first gear) so I was able to concentrate more on picking my line and so on. And yah know something? There is this thing called second gear I now use every once in a while! 8O

Yeah, I could have maybe bought the 450 instead (the 390 wasn't out yet), but that isn't what I bought - I didn't even ride one. My mistake. But I have talked to a few people who have ridden all three, and for the kind of riding I do and my level of skill, they don't think I made a big mistake. A number of people have ridden my bike with the 12/52 gearing and the Rekluse and they call it 'The Tractor', which is pretty much what I want.

It still scoots along fine from my house to the trails and back, and it has plenty of power wherever I want it.

Besides - it isn't very hard to switch back and forth if I want to - takes about fifteen minutes.

Totally agree with ya codemonkey I am also z grade rider but I couldn't see why even a pro would want more than 100mph unless we're talking desert racing. I have 13/52 and will never change it I am loving uncotrolable power wheelies when I least expect it 8)

I am zz grade and love the FE570. Would not swap it for FE390 or FE450. I have not even been bothered trying "soft" setting on the Map Switch. It puts along on the hard hills no worries, my right knee gets a little hot from the thermo fan but that is a problem I can happily live with.
Yes the uncontrollable power wheelies are a buz, little scarey when the front wheel pops up though.
Am also toying with the idea of the 12 sproket on the front to slow me up even more :)

Most of the difference in the map settings is in the power band above putting along and even then it is linear, just more of it. I leave it on 'traction' and the bike can still do most anything I want. The only place I would want more is above 50 MPH on the pavement.

I no longer do wheelies if I can help it. About 15 years ago thats all I did on my DR350 - every chance I got - showing off everywhere. Well one time I slipped and the bike got away from me and I did a full on power wheelie from a stoplight across an intersection and I dropped the bike on my left foot. I was wearing street shoes (now ATGATT, but then...) and the bike's frame crushed my foot. Broke many bones, lots of cuts and bruises. Reconstructive surgery, pins, a week off work (no health insurance - $7K out of my own pocket, and that was mild compared to what it could have been), painkillers for weeks, pins and crutches for months. A can for months more. Now, years later, my left foot still hurts, is a half size larger than the right and the scars from the accident/surgery are still there.

So yeah, you can keep your wheelies - although I did one up a trail today - pics later of the results.

Yeah when I go for a ride I go for a ride which means boots nylons armour gloves etc. Nice fern garden mate getting close to nature is probably a good thing but jeez...... :D IMHO 14 48 would tame the wheelies a bit but for tight 1 st cog stuff maybe not so good but then if you have a auto clucth not so bad. When I say I'm a z grader I mean I dont compete but I do "have a Go " when I'm out & about
