'10 valve clearance

Hey bergers. Just picked up my 2010 FE450. It's my first true off road bike, as opposed to a converted mx bike, and my first serious four stroke. I really like the engine and suspension! On to my question.

At 6 hours I checked the valve clearances. Exhaust valves were both 0.14mm, right in the middle of the range. The intake valves were 0.13 and 0.11. 0.11 is pretty close to the limit. Do the clearances tend to get tighter or looser over time?

It was my experience that the valve lash actually increased from the 3 hour check. Finish the break in of 20 hours and check them again and I think you will find things to be in good shape.

There are quite a few bikes out there, some with a hundred hours on them that have never had to adjust their valves. I did adjust my exhausts as one was .0005" too loose. The intakes have not moved since about 20 hours.

Ola,

The new engines are great. the valve/seat combination lasts 4ever.
the "weakest link" is lubrication of the rockerarms. The rollers will deteriorate over time, the contact surface of rockerarm where it follows the camshaft needs attention over time as well.
furthermore, the shims tend to get a recess where it sit's on the valve stem.

In general, the gap will get bigger, not tighter, over time.
Messure the original thickness of the shim, replace it and it will be probably be OK again.

have fun with the best standard bike that money can buy,
Adrian

gaps get tighter as valve beds into the seat. intakes seem ok but exhausts go tighten up, just had to open mine up a bit.

my exhaust ones needed opening a bit at 35h. its getting a hammering tho on the racetrack doing supermoto
