10/02 FE 501 bogging down when hot

Hi All Ive been reading some posts and have some tests to do but help would be appreciated.
My nephews FE501 10/02 models stator died on the first ride he went on a few weeks ago so I replaced it with an electrex one as thats all I can get here in OZ. It ran well for a couple of hours then started to bog down as if there was no spark or fuel in the higher rev range, it would put along in the lower rev range but open it up and nothing.
I'm servicing it this week and will re do valve clearances and pull the carby apart and check that, could the cdi have been damaged when the stator packed it in? ive read to put a 280v 3w zenner on the output of the stator as well but cant source one in OZ is this needed, anticipate your replys.

hi
if the electex has damaged ur cdi i think taffy is the only guy that can fix them or u could source a used cdi but u could end up with another fried cdi unit, if ur cdi is actually broken and u would like to stay with the electrex i would recommend getting ur cdi repaired because they are then electrex safe.
if ur stator has gone bad im sure they come with 12 months warranty and if u have recently purchased it i would send it back and get another.
if u decide u want to go back to sem i rewind them i charge 120 gbp free postage free stator cover gasket and 12 months warranty

cheers kris

Hi
If you have spark I would assume that you still have CDI, the stator you can check the values, they should be the same as SEM, if you don't know them check owners docs.
About the Zener it was me that posted that, it's the easy and obvious solution, but I never tried it because I never used one electrex or hpi, I've always used rewinds
Good luck

did you strobe the ignition timing?

no

a tip with the electrex. ****** IT RIGHT TO THE END OF THE SLOTS AND EVEN THEN WISH YOU COULD HAVE GONE ANOTHER 1-2MM!

there you go! as for the lack of spark well check the output of the electrex on the red to black which should be around 3,000 and if it isn't then that leaves the coil. try and borrow one even if it is just for starting it. and as said, I'm the only bloke that gets them repaired!

sorry everyone work has been crazy and have only pulled the carby out of the bike on the weekend. The jets were pretty clogged and the needle doesn't look real flash, the needle clip was on the lowest setting, is this right? bike normally operates at sea level and not usually above 1500ft in mostly humid conditions. The stator is spot on with its readings and performs fine until it gets hot, I think I advanced the timing, I will try retarding it once I get the carby sorted. thanks for your replys

maybe i missed it but what carb is this? if its the phm40 dellorto, clip should be 2nd groove down from the top on the needle. clip too high its leaner, clip lower holds the needle out farther with less throttle input so will come onto main sooner and be rich running.

sounds like the carb would need a super cleaning to start, if the jets are clogged replace them if possible and blow it all out with high pressure air, i have had the needle too low and cause hot only driveability problems, like bogging when cruising during slight throttle changes and also have had the float adjusted to high and make it get sticky in the linkage and bind intermittantly and cause it to do similar things but not just when hot.

OK - not exactly sure of the outcome of this thread so far but my stories the same.....

My FE02 501 bogged down just like this today at the local MX track.

Cold was fine - shot off like a rocket through all gears - got 1/2 way round the track just bogged down like fuel starvation.

Drained the carb / changed the plug - did exactly the same five times.

Fine ticking along in first - open it up it bobbles / backfires - pops & bogs down.

I put in a sparks stator about a year / 18 months ago - all fine till now. Will check the values later but does this sound like a stator issue ?? I knoe these are prone to stator issues but surely 12 - 18 months is a bit short time ? or not??

Cheers.

ok everyone I know its been a while but there is no rest for the wicked, I ordered all the jets from delloto on line and replaced them and all is sweet runs like a champ. I have another issue now and will post a new thread.

By the way I managed to get myself a bargin at a local bike shop when a bloke broke his back on a 2010 fx 450, Im loving it just put map switch on and really liven's it up, I paid 7k with only 3 hrs on it.
