hello all
Got that 10,000th mile last week on the ol 2004 fe550 :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
The places that machine has taken me and the amount of joy it has brought to my face are truly astounding, i am a lucky boy. Now i am torn whether to sell it, ride it til it stops, or have the motor gone through and freshened up. I like having 2 bikes, at least, for a back up. I have been riding the snot out of the 2007 Fe650 too, 3500+ and 155+hours. the 550 is still running, sounding, starting awesome. It does seem a little down on power though, but i could just be used to the 650.
The only things I did to the 550 are;
80-90 oil changes of my own custom blend I mix Rotella non synthetic with Mobil 1 15/50
Changed Air Filter 4 times Kidding
1 water pump seal
stator wire solder joint failed, i just re soldered
1 kick starter shaft seal
replaced cam chain, or i should say BUZZARD did Thanx
I think 6 valve adjusts
Lot and Lots and Lots of WHeelies :D :D :D :D
And rarely wash the bike
I am sure i am forgetting stuff, but maybe not.
RIDE ON

The oil mix is probably pretty good. Only occationally i have tried Mobil one 5W50 mixed with long drain high performance diesel engine oil but found that the slickness of the mobil one is retained but there is more oil mist coming out through the vent as if you used the mineral oil only and it probably lubricates the valve train too just as well as the mineral oil, maybe even better. I think I used 1/3 of long drain high performance diesel engine oil and 2/3 of Mobil one 5W50. I dont really remember.
The best of both PAO and mineral oil all at the same time?
Congratulations on the 395 hours!
"Now i am torn whether to sell it, ride it til it stops, or have the motor gone through and freshened up." Yes, that is the question...
Regards.

my god 395hrs on it and no bearing failure??
ok it's an FE and i think FS have a harder time coping with the forces of road racing (or am i wrong here?)
i had a bearing fail on me just 2 weeks after i bought it (second hand),it had only 44hrs on the clock and 2460km on it.
then i got it fixed and now done 10hrs orso and all is still running smooth.
i do keep my fingers crossed :-s

i am running on MOTUL 300V faktory line 15w50 oil.
why do you guys mix two oils,is that so much better then al other available oils?
any input on the oil issue would be greatly appreciated

ciao, hannes.

Hey There
My reasoning for mixing the 2 oils is mainly cause i am a frugal ******* and i change my oil a lot and it saves me a few bucks a change.
good luck

Bearing failures get WAY too much press. When I had my berg apart, they were perfect. We need to start complaining about something new like "the graphics don't match" so we can be like the guys who own Japanese bikes.

Hi Cheeseberger,

Congratulations on the 10,000 mile milestone, let me guess you warm the engine up good from cold and you don't rev the nuts off it, just ride it using the broad spread of power.

Would be interesting to know if there is any body else on the site that can claim a higher mileage with minimum maintenance.

larent-c has stated that he had 32,000 km and 800 plus hours on a 501 without any "engine operation"

:D It never occured to me that he might be towing it..talk about dedication!
I see he has recently posted as probably one of the first to recieve an 09.
thread title "she is here" you can ask him if he is going to tow this one as well!i
