09 vs 10 fuel tanks ?

I have had a 2010 FE 570 since about November and my son just bought a left over 2009 FE 570. We were adding accessories to the 09 and had the fuel tank off. We noticed that we could see the fuel level on the 09 fairly easy which is a nice convenience over the 2010. I have the Pro-Fill tank spout filter in the 2010 and it is practically impossible to tell how much fuel is in the tank without removing the filter and using a flashlight and that is marginal at best. I seem to spill fuel everytime on fill ups and need to use some other system to control the fuel other than 5 gallon jugs. We looked into an 09 tank and it is almost prohibitive at $339.00 .
I've had an idea but I'm apprehensive to try it. Does anyone think it is possible to put a sight tube on the fuel tank ? Maybe just behind the left radiator. It would require a bulkhead fitting of some sort in the bottom of the tank and possibly hooking back into the cap breather hose on the top ??? I would appreciate any thoughts and ideas ! Thanks, Dana

Hi Dana,

Here's another idea. Why not add T-fittings to your lower fuel line and to your breather at the tank cap. Attach a clear fuel line between the two. When filling your tank with gas, just rest the cap near the tank opening and watch the gas level in the clear fuel line you added. Seems like you could route the clear fuel line where ever you want, forward of the tank. This idea will not work if you use a check valve in the breather. The level in the tank will show in the clear tube. Basically this is the same as your idea without drilling into your tank. Very cheap to try!!!

Here are some pics of the T-fitting I use for my bike. This is for the vent line from my auxillary tank. Granted, the tank, cap etc. are different than your 2010 bike and I don't use it as a visual aid because my tank is translucent but, I can see the level of gas when both tanks are near full and the petcock is open. Again, this won't work if you have an anti-spill check valve in the line.

Good luck and let us know if it works! I think it will. Actually, I know it will. It will serve as visual fuel gauge too!

If $339 is prohibitive then I suggest you don't look into the cost of aux. tanks without a defibrillator handy.

The bit with a sight tube of some sort is probably your best bet.

Logjump,
I believe your idea is great for a carburated bike but the lower fuel line on the new bergs is pressurized from the fuel injection.
Codemonkey,
The 339 wouldn't be so bad if didn't already have a functional fuel tank if you know what I mean. I could put the 339 towards a steering damper , auto clutch , etc. haha

Bummer, I didn't realize that line was pressurized.

Such is the problem with black gas tanks.

FWIW, a few years back someone was producing these little white balls that you put in your tank that floated on the gas, so when you fill up the balls come to the surface before the fuel does.

yeah good stuff rick,
a simple idea i have on my house rain water tank, which i didn't apply to my fuel tank(till now).
i have the alloy tank with the black under seat fuel cell,as you can imagine,it really is a guess at how much fuel is in the tanks when it goes out of sight.
pressureised fuel lines ...hey, i bet ya didn't see that one coming.
call me old fashioned with a carby, but its good to keep it simple stupid.....as they say.
i remember a while back, when i got back home after a long ride, i ripped the fuel line off just to measure how much fuel i had left.
well....i got a bit of a shock when only 25ml's dribbled out. 8O
maybe it's lucky i didn't know how much i had left in the tanks, cause i had "not a worry in the world" when i had her cranked wide open on the way home!
good luck with the ping pong balls you blokes with the slant motors
cheers ..weed..

Thanks allot you crazy OZ , I just spit coffee all over my keyboard !! LOL OK the scenario is I need to looksy in the fuel tank to check the level. So I reach in with my grubby hands and remove the Pro Fill filter hopefully not knocking any massive grit in there to plug my injector.(pretty much offsets the whole meaning of the filter) Wow that is the blackest hole I have ever looked into even the white ping pong balls don't have a prayer of showing up ! LOL . Ok only half full ,better add more fuel. Re-install filter . Add more fuel. Oh sh!t too much ! Just ran down into my air cleaner . Super rich on start-up but oh well. There would be a very good chance of this happening on every fill .  :cuss: :cuss:

Uhh, I don't think you literally want to use a ping pong ball as it being plastic it may dissolve in gas (a lot of plastic dissolves in gas) - try one in a container of gas first.

Ya we know that ,it was just an expression to describe the look. Be like trying to prime the old Rambler with a styrafoam cup of gas. Better hurry !!

I have read the differences about the 2010 FE 570 and 2009 FE 570. It is nice and interesting stuff. Now I can clear about the features of 2009 model and 2010 model. I am appreciated for your valuable knowledge.
