09 fe450 throttle on start

hello everyone, this is one of my first posts here. i have a 2009 fe450 that needs a little bit of throttle to start when the engine is warm (still might take two or three goes). However when it is cold, the berg fires up right away at the touch of a button... i have read somewhere that this could be a sign of a deteriorating injector or fuel pump, causing it to run lean. i have also heard that this behavior is just how they are (due to preset ecu settings).
i have checked the valves and all is good. the only thing is that the cam chain makes horrid rattle noises:unsure: and i plan on replacing the tensioner with a manual one. (could a slack chain retard the valve timing enough to make it hard to start?)
I'm just a little annoyed that it doesn't start at the tap of the button:furious: or am i just expecting too much...
just wandering if anyone else experiences this or if there is a fix
cheers
dan

tap it

try tapping the start button real quick to get the pump to cycle, then try to start it. Does that help?
Could be tps is out of adjustment. read other recent post on calibrating your tps.
Could be weak battery..
loose terminals
plug wire corrosion.
Frayed kill switch wire is also common to make things act up

Easiest things first.

otherwise possible fuel pump issue
or dirty injector pre filter(found in injector).

The original map can also need a little bit of gas to start. My old 390 had me give about 1mm throttle. My new 570 has a map made by my dealer and he told me they fixed that issue so no gas.

Be careful not to give too much gas as the fuel cuts off then. To do the "carburetor flick" just shuts off the fuel.

thanks for the replies. yes i try to keep the start to just the 'tap of the button and wait for fuel pressure to build, this usually helps. but like jon andersson said for his 390, mine requires about 1mm of throttle, only when hot.
im pretty certain its not the wireing or plugs/ loose terminals as i have just recently cleaned all the plugs and earths, some looked a bit dirty.
i will take a look at the easy stuff first... just had it all apart the other day when checking valves... should have cleaned injector and filter then
what is involved with getting the ecu remapped? how much can be changed? just curious...

yeah righto cheers everyone. at least now i know that its not just my berg having problems...its just some of the problems that bergs have:)
Gotta love the berg though...

my brother has experienced the same problem with two of our suzuki Kingquad 750's. they needed a bit of throttle to start, so, long story short, he basically removed the idle speed control valve (the electronically actuated valve which lets air through the throttle body when no throttle is applied) and took a file & filed a bit off... letting a bit more air through on start up. it did not alter the actual idling speed when the engine was running because while it is running it adjusts itself accordingly. this was a case of the preset computer setting just being wrong.... but problem fixed.
just wandering if the same could be done to the berg... i don't even know if its the same set up though

Check the tps for sure. Bike should fire without throttle and especially when warm. Unless someone has custom mapped the ECU the mapping wont be the problem. The tps do move over time on their own lol gremlins I am sure :) I read someone explaining the settings in the last couple of days so there should be fresh info on this. It seems to be a common problem and I think it all comes down to the tps moving on these bikes. Worth a try and setting it to spec is a good idea anyway. Hope you find it as nothing worse than slow starting.

IAC's have a bad habbit of sticking and get build up. Let your brother know that cleaning it with a fine sandpaper or using a chemical cleaner is a better option than filing it. It only need be cleaned. Eventually filing will create a loss of smooth idle over time and then a new IAC will be required.

yeah I plan on checking the tps, Ill say how it goes when I've played around with it a bit

yeah I been talking to him about it and he said he attacked them when they were near new... and yes, the reason for him pulling it out was he thought they might be gumped up. but he said after checking every single sensor and resistance/ voltage testing, etc, he finally concluded that the idle valve was just not opening enough and was too rich (probably something to do with our climate conditions- dry hot air) Anyway, both quads have now done over a thousand hours each and no dramas;)
haha he said he wouldn't recommend doing it... cause "It looked easy to stuff up"
Note to self: keep my brother and a file away from my berg...

No iac on the 70 deg bergs. Have you tried pulling tye idle knob out when trying to start it?
