09 FE 450 Bogging whilst riding

recently my 09 450, 120hrs on it has been fluffing and bogging as you open the throttle mainly on straights or on the road..
and also pick up occasional back fires on over run?

its not a constant problem as sometimes it goes like the clappers and others it feels really stiffeled and like it wont clear until you next open the throttle...

any ideas? i haven't put a pump or injector on it yet and hoping for some advise on which to go for....

has also been taking a few turns to fire up for a while... i dont know if this is linked or just a slightly squiffy battery or not?

Hi,

I have had what sounds like the same problem two times, both times caused by a bad spark plug cap.
If the bogging gets worse when it gets wet, it is probably just that.
 
this seems to be when its perfectly dry... almost like over/under fueling?? not sure which, but when stationary you blip the throttle and it gives puffs of black smoke? running rich somehow?!

Same old story. Check the fuel pump, it might be on the edge of enough pressure to run correctly.
Check it now before it totally fails.
 
is that with the, blow back up the pipe to see if it is petrol tight thing? how else do you check them...

Can do that or hook up a pressure guage to be sure. If the check valve test fails (blowing into hose), pump is no good for sure. This will also cause the slow starting since it takes a couple seconds to build fuel pressure.

A pressure guage hooked up so you can view while riding will let you know if pump is failing, it should read over 50PSI.

Start there before looking at other things.
