Hi,

a friend of mine has a brand new 550 which started and ran for about 30 secs. Then nothing. Changed stator - no help, changed carburetor - no help, spark plug etc.
Checked valve timing, they should be ok. Ignition timing is unchecked. How to check it when the engine does not run? Does the ignition start when the knob in the flywheel starts to pass the pickup coil?

And how much cylinder pressure is normal in a 550? (broken rings?)

Any ideas?

did you check to see if had any spark?

Did you check the stator and pick up for proper ohm readings? How about if you disconnect the kill switch?

It had a spark, newer plug was a bit weaker then the old one. Tried to start with the kill switch pressed- no spark. Haven't been able to measure it.

Took the engine apart. Front and back upper edge of the piston worn heavily. Upper front part of the liner worn/deep scratches. My best guess would be that when the engine first time was started, it sucked metal pieces from the frame (welding deposits?) and the pieces jammed between the piston and liner.

Is it covered under warranty,
Not to try to grab a sale from this but I have a sleeve, piston/rings, crank, various bearings from a 05 550, the sleeve, piston/rings and crank are second hand and have done 10hrs, came from a bike that dropped the main bearings and had a total rebuild under warranty, all parts in excellent condition, all other parts are new.
PM for details, open to offers

I did some more measuring and found out that the liner is oval -0.03 undersize and axial 0.065 oversize. Is there any cases where factory new oval liner would cause engine seizure?

yes 100%

i really hate to say it but i have slammed this subject out lately and had absolutely zilch response. if you care to go into mechanical or search it's been a big bugbear of mine lately.

Cant say i agree with the out of round cylinder theory
This egine ran for only thirty seconds
If was piston seizure related from a poor cylinder where did all the debris come from above the rings
measuring a cylinder liner from a Berg is not so easy.
You can make the needle on the bore gauge move just by hand pressure from holding the liner.
Was the crank removed from the cases, the liner reinstalled then measured?

30 seconds was corrected to 2 minutes. The liner was measured loose, which is not as accurate way of doing it. The bore was firmly on the table when measured, no extra pressure to it. My check was only for the curiosity as my own liner is/was a bit worn (had to replace it). I did not mention any loose particles found, only heavy scratches and a seized upper ring. The heavy oval shape could explain the escape of pressure, I measured only 1,5 to 3,5 psi, the race SM next to it was 6,5 (different piston) and 450e was 6.

i agree with nsman that nothing so far explains the marks above the rings: however, the bike would sieze in under 1 hour with a distorted linar.

The odd thing is that bike bike, as far as I was told, did not seize totally. It stopped and never started again. First it felt a bit heavy but now when I tried it, it felt like kicking a 2-stroke.
