Checked the preload as standard. Came with two 10mm preload spacers. Put another 10mm spacer and backed off the fork cap preload adjuster to 1 turn (leaving about 8mm more preload). Bike handled a lot better....., but what would be the maximum preload before coil binding? It was hard to get the extra 10mm in and I used an old style wp spacer that has a larger internal diameter that allowed me to slide it down allowing me to get a spanner on the nut so the fork cap could be tightened.

once you go past 6mm total PL it starts to feel harsh initially, just a little.

need to measure the springs and count the coils to work out their total travel theyre all a little bit different

bergs have SFA travel in the forks can't see it would be a problem " normally" to add 20mm

0.54s wouldn't be too stiff for MX IMHO though ive not tried it.

There is preload and the amount of spacers. Yes can get a bit harsh, it would be great if the fast speed compression dampening could be adjusted from the outside, however, with the preload spacers of 20mm the static sage was around 40mm and winding the preload from the top of the fork could make a feel of difference but the fork did not shift much from 40mm static sag. On the 650 cc I like that as the torque lifts the front and can cause washing out, but with the 450 I have found so far the 30mm of spacers sends me towards 35mm static sag and leaves me the preload adjuster on the top of the fork. I have found in twisty single track with woops and sand it works well.... so far.

Add too much pre load and you will compress the top out springs.

Says in the manual that " Pretension spacers are available in heights of 1.5, 2.5, and 5mm. The fork springs may not be pretensioned by more than 20mm"

Let's start off with the basics................

How much do you weigh, and what's your ability level.

thanks DaleEO, this bike is an 08 450 that I picked up recently and am goining through the setting up stage.

77kg without riding gear. I have looked at the part break up and can't see a top out spring. I did not check the preload (measure the spring length and then how much it was reduced with the spacers). I noted that there are two white rings that were under the cap compressing the springs and they totalled 20mm in space. With the cap screwed down you can get another 9 mm ( I think). With the cap preload spacing at zero turns the fork static sag (no rider) was close to 50mm. Better when I screwed the cap preload down. What I have done is put another 10mm on top of the existing 20mm, and turned the cap preload one turn. The bike performed much better.
