Been putting it off for ages but deciding to get it out of the way. After a bit of info on gear.
Main bearings: are skf ok or ntn better? Or is there better ones that will fit?
Crank and rod: anything to look for? Is it worth throwing in a new rod while I got it apart? If so what's good to get?
Piston and liner: are the liners easy enough to re-bore to a larger piston? Is there a ktm piston that will slip in?
Crank play: is .5mm good to work with, I can't see myself using the motor to its full potential and was wondering if this was a good ball park figure or if I should go more or less
Is there anything else I should really look at while its apart? Any tips and worthy mods would be greatly appreciated thanks

A; we have had raging battles here but after 10 years of the SKF and no problems there is no argument anymore. the SKFs or the NTNs will do you as long as you have 0.65mm of axial float.

Crank and rod: anything to look for?
A; yes, the little end bush will likely be worn out.

Is it worth throwing in a new rod while I got it apart?
A; that's de-luxe and the rumour is there from all the mains trouble. in all honesty, NO. they could probably all have been left alone for a lot longer than they were but hindsight is a wondeful thing! however, to do the little end properly you are meant to remove the rod. I get away with it and I'm sure you can too. If therefore I had the rod off i would fit a new B/E bearing only as the pin will be perfect.

If so what's good to get?
A; don't understand that English?

Piston and liner: are the liners easy enough to re-bore to a larger piston?
A; absolutely noway, don't even think about it. just tune it the old school way using your brain!

Is there a ktm piston that will slip in?
A; no there isn't a standard KTM piston that will slip in. I make a piston but that is my secret. when i do a piston i increase the compression lightly, I have to now due to the underside shape of the Wossners I use.

Crank play: is .5mm good to work with, I can't see myself using the motor to its full potential and was wondering if this was a good ball park figure or if I should go more or less
A; this was answered at the top. 0.65mm minimum.

Is there anything else I should really look at while its apart?
race cam from me. gas flowed inlets as well. jetting kit. bellmouth kit, cone air filter. DVSK. H/C piston.

Any tips and worthy mods?
tappet pads cupped, cam chain had it? clutch plates warped? exhaust valves not seating? auto decomp spring too soft? needs a starter repair kit for the starter gears?
iridium plug?

they don't need much, you only need a flywheel puller to get them apart.

regards

Taffy

Ntn better ..yes definitely. Skf need more endfloat for the same power and Rpm and are more expensive.

As Alan wrote ... Talk to John prior

Wossner 570 berg piston goes in

Stock cam is best
