07 450 will not idle, popping

i have a friend who has bought an 07 450 ( which he loves by the way) and i have been working on a few odd and end things with it. it has never idled well, sometimes better than others. has to have alot of choke, and idle screw run all the way in. this condition has been irratic but now is the norm. when he bought this bike it had been sitting for 9 or 10 monthes in a dealership, they had to drain gas and replace spark plug cap to get bike to start at that time. bike seems to run real lean, so i cked for air leaks, none found, removed carb and found pilot appeared to be stopped up, also accel pump full of crud, so i thought i found the problem, but no change. while i had carb apart i made sure slide was in correct and oring on fuel screw. so i thought since they had changed spark plug cap i would try a coil even though spark looked good, so i swapped coils out of my bike 06 ktm 450 exc and installed new plug, still no go. so i swapped ign module, no change. the header pipes look to have been resealed, i have never heard of this causing no idle issue. also on carb they had a 190 mj with 45 pj, stock needle in 4th clip which i would think would be kinda rich for this bike. also cked valve clearence and did leakdown test with about 5% leakage. and ideas would be appreciated, think i will swap carbs off my bike tomorrow and see if there is a difference. thanks for any help. -jamie

Check the usual suspects...clean the carb properly, check the jetting (standard works well actually, especially regarding idle) - and adjust valve tappet clearance.

Hi Jamie,

If all jets and passage ways are clear then your probelm will most likely be the FS under the carb. What turn setting out is it at momment.
Make sure the passage way from the PJ to the FS is clear.
You are well over rich on the MJ and a tad on the PJ, but this shouldn't effect the idle, if the PAJ is still standard #100.

Regards

Sparks.

i'd say - when you change carbs the problem will be gone. the ptroblem is still in that caeb!

After all of the above I would check the ignition pick up for the correct clearance or possibly a woodruff key?

One more thing to check, the intake boot being cracked can cause just such a problem. They have been known to do that.

bike ran great with my carb., went back thru carb and cleaned passage from pilot to fuel screw, reassembled and it runs fine now. thanks for all the replies. -jamie
