here is an easy way to find tdc to check valve adjustments
put bike on a stand
take off tank
and valve covers
now take out spark plug
get a coat hanger and straighten it out
put bike in gear, now poke the wire hanger into the plug hole till it hits piston, now roll rear wheel and the wire will move, when it moves all the way up and
stops moving before it goes back down and that is tdc, now to make sure you at the right tdc watch this link to find the right rotation.
valve tappet gap should be .12mm or .005in

very good video.

the coat hanger trick is what you use to find the capacity of a ford cleveland 302 and 351, 302 has 3' stronke and 351 has 3.5' stroke

nice one but it's far better to remove the plug, and remove the tappet covers before rotating the engine with a T-bar.

controlling the engine you wanna see the inlets closing and then just at that moment and following:
1998-2003
as the two scribed marks on the flywheel are at 8 o' clock bring them around to 12 o' clock.

2004-2008
the staple will be at 5 o' clock and bring it around to 9 o' clock with the leading edge of the staple in line with the lower edge of the cover screw hole nearby.

Where's Froggy when you need him?

If you have to stick a foreign object into your spark plug hole to figure out how to adjust your valves, maybe the job is above your abilities in the first place. Four stroke engine--cars, bikes, trucks, tractors, whatever--are all the same. Valves are adjusted when they are closed fully. This can be whenever they are on the "heel" of the cam--no TDC necessary. Besides, there are TWO TDC cycles on a four stroke--only on one of the TDC cycles are both sets of valves closed, and your coat hanger, pencil, straw, etc ain't that smart. Plus, when you break off whatever you stuck down there and come back here and ask for help, well...we'll be real understanding.

By the time you unbend a coat hanger, you could read up on how the valves open and close on a four stroke engine, and you won't have to stick anything into your engine.

yes well a coat hanger aint gonna break and yes there are 2 tdc like you say thats why you use that you tube
vid to fid the right one, this is just a help for people who aren't to sure and allows people to be sure that the piston is at tdc
. so don't be a rude smart *** this site is to help people not to put other people down.
people like you ruin websites. :finger:

on your 550 with the full circle crank sikd there is a crank locking bolt hole located near the crankcase split at the front of the LH CCase

when its near tdc if yuo like you can take out the plug and put a longer bolt in til it just touches the crank then jiggle it till it goes into its pocket machined in the crank

good enough for valve lash maybe not good enough for lobe timing.

I always think setting valve lash must be easy as there are so many ways different people do it and the engine still works.

yeah i have no problem checking clearance, just read alot of people have issue or not have much idea, so i put this post up to give people a bit more confidence,
in knowing the piston is at the top and the vid helps with getting it right.

thanks for the info tho, i interested in trying other ways to find easiest way to do things.
thanks heaps :)

i don't see a problem sticking a coat hanger in to see tdc, but there are easier ways. as taffy implied, on a berg its best to pull the ign cover (4 bolts and its dry), use a t handle to turn the engine (if you use a ratchet, the cam ramp will drive you crazy). with the valve inspection covers off, turn it over untill the intakes open then close. then put a blunt tipped something (if the handiest thing is a coathanger, so be it (SO BE IT)) in the plug hole and gently turn the t handle to tdc. when you are at tdc, mark the position of the flywheel to the case at the top so that the next time you won't have to stick anything in the hole. (not that there's anything wrong with that  )

thats a excellent idea a once of thing that will make it easier for next time,

I didn't put you down. I don't think you should stick anything down the plug hole when you don't need to. I post what I think and don't make personal attacks. I've been around this site a while longer than you (site's not ruined yet, hmm) and haven't had to resort to posting up a cartoon finger . Pretty lame.

na sorry about that everyone has own opinion i do apologise, theres enough info here now for even the novices to give this simple task a shot.
