Can any of you guys tell me exactly what it is? Make, model, and # of links?

The bike I just bought has an RK520EXW and it's too wide; it touches the clutch slave cover. The previous owner installed it and never rode it.

BTW-Anyone want to buy a new chain? :)

Thanks!

Nobody? Seriously? Anyone want to tell me what they're running on theirs?

I had a look at that chain and it is as I suspected a heavy duty o'ring chain. I have just replaced the chain on my 02 650 and just put a standard 520 non o'ring chain on it. The problem you have is that the o'ring chain is wider with having the seals in between the links, just put a standard 520 non o'ring chain on and you will be fine.

My 04 fs650 came new with an Oring chain and I bought a H/D oring (regina) for dirt gearing and have no clearance issues. Its definatly oring and not X ring? Could the front sprocket be on wrong way round?

The offset on the front sprocket is the same toward either side. You guys still gave me no specifics. There is a huge difference between the widest o-ring chain and the narrowest. There is an even bigger difference between the narrowest non o-ring and the widest sealed chain... we are talking about 5mm, plus another 2+mm for a clip vs rivet master link. Anyway, I am going to run an RK GB520MXZ4 for now and see how it lasts. It's unsealed but very narrow. Next chain will be a DID 520VT2, which is an x-ring chain, but very narrow anyway. The 520ERV3 is pretty awesome (I ran a ERV chain on a Hawk of mine back in the day), but it's almost $200! I'll let you guys know how it goes...

RK 520 GBMXZ4 pin length 17.7mm +clip
another choice... DID 520ERT2 17.6mm +clip
DID 520 VT2 pin length 18.7mm rivet

The one I have now that does not fit:
RK GB520EXW pin length 20.8mm +clip

My 05 Fs650e has a DID 520 VM which I believe is the original. Measures 20.6 across the clip link.
It rubs the frame and tire slightly.
Clears the clutch slave cover by about 1mm.
Are you sure your front sprocket has the right amount of offset?

Cheers spanner

The master link was smacking the frame with the fat chain. The slave cover was being "touched" if I pushed on the side of it. Would probably work OK if I used a rivet link.

Anyway, I replaced the big chain with the mx chain and all is well. Everything else is where and as it should be.

Over here in the UK I use, buy and sell Iris FD chains. X-ring and I get seasons out of them. a great little chain.

regards

Taffy

Don't run a RK 520mxv4. they are absolutly ****. I have a 2005 fs 650e, and I replaced the chain a little under 2 months ago. and the chain is already finished. I have to adjust it every time I go riding ( I comute to work with my bike every day 85km total ). I already have had to take out two links, When it gets loose it hits the tire and is chewing it up. this chain is the narrowest chain out there and is very light, it is suppose to have I think 8500" tensile strenght. save your money and buy something else. My next chain is going to be the D.I.D 520vm, I've heard good things about this chain and it supposably clears the clutch cover.

Get DID Ert2 non-o ring chain. The best and lightest chain available. Narrow enough to run 170 wide Dunlops without rubbing issue.

Don't bother, it's a mx race chain for up to 450cc's. I thought it would be fine and last at least as long as a rear tire.
I put a DID ERT2 on my FS650e with cush hub, and had to remove two links after 1000 miles. I moved the axle back like 10mm over 6-8 adjustments.
I expected it to need adjusting a few times, but not all the time. (Yes I lubed it regularly.)
Here's what it looked like at about 1000 miles.

I had to adjust it every other ride. It's at 1,500 miles now and about done. Every link has lots of play front to back and side to side. I'm not even going to bother to measure it, I know it's done. I'm looking for a narrowish x-ring chain to clear a 160 rear. Any suggestions? This is on a sumo 650 with some dirt use.

Old thread but was looking for some info on the number of links on stock 650 chain because I have to buy one...
On my 570 I had stock and after that chain did vx2 (very light/narrow chain) but the did din't ( :p ) last very long...
Now I run a ek mvxz 520 it is much wider and more heavy than the did chain but because it's much stronger (higher tensile strength and rated to 1000cc bikes! )
It does not wear out quickly and not much play in the chain sideways so the tire stays ok it's not the cheapest chain out there but much cheaper than a did erv3 for example and lasts longer....
I am hoping to finally get some reasonable mileage out of the chain these bikes just eat chains:rolleyes:

what about the RK 520GXW
Seems like an interesting option also a little cheaper than the ek and still plenty tensile strength....

I have tried the 520GXW, and it will only work with slicks or "prepped" tires. Any 160 DOT approved tire will get chewed up if not "prepped". By prepped, I mean taking a hand planer and removing the edge of the tire until you get the clearance you're looking for.

I got Q3's on the cheap, but ended up having to shave about 5-7 mm of the drive side. This sucks because, between the tire profile and missing material, powering out of a tight right turn the rear breaks loose.

If I drop tire pressure to 18 PSI I can get it to stick better, but the tire rubs the chain and the swing arm on the opposite side.

Now I just use a standard chain until I wear out the Q3 and get a narrower 160 on there.

5-7mm is a lot...
I realy don't know what to choose anymore...
The erv3 would work great but to expensive.
The vx2 chain is only a good option if you want to replace the chain every 4000km....
And more budget friendly/durable chains are to wide for the rear tyre with 5 inch 160 combo...
On my 570 I have an ek mvxz520 works ok but with a wide tyre it also rubs the chain slightly much wider and heavy than the did vx2/erv3....
What is the stock chain? (brand/type... )

Maybe did vt2 narrow/light reasonable tensile strength interesting chart:

you need to run DID 520 VM or EK 520 as they are narrower and don't rub the slave cylinder, some other chains may be ok. but have to be narrow
