'06 Fe650 suitable for long rides? (oil management)

I'm a returning trail rider after many years on the road bikes and have lost a lot of my bike savvy knowledge. I'm on an '06 Fe650 (monster of a bike btw) and I'm interested in doing full-day or even weekend long trail rides. A mate of my old man ran a KTM dealership years ago and has commented that extended trips on these big girls is not a good idea because of the amount of oil (1L) and he suggested they burn oil too. Has anybody got experience here? Would taking a few hundred mL with me get me out of trouble on the trails or is it really a case of just not happening. I'm talking about a good couple/few hundred kms over a weekend if I can manage it.

If the engine is sound you should have no problem. The main issue with the 650 oil consumption is at high rpm, say pounding a lot of tarmac. For trail riding it should not be an issue. the sump only holds a litre tops, so it would be advised to at least have a look at the oil level every morning. Most people I know will change the oil 3-400k, it's cheap insurance.

Even with 400 hours on my 650, oil consumption is around 50ml per ~400 miles. I do have a one-way check valve on the breather though. With the breather as stock (to the airbox/frame) it used a little more, maybe same amount in 250 miles. I carry a couple small nalgene bottles of oil in my pack.

Sustained high rpm's with the stock breather setup sends alot of oil mist through the air intake as stated above.

The one way check valve really peaked my interest. Where do I get one and how much?

As it is, wih the 2 breather ports the tube has been removed from the frame-dumping system and literally has 1 vompletely blocked off with a hose bung and the other has a tube dumping any oil onto the bashplate. I'm wondering for a start why the hell they would do this and also if there is any issue with this setup. The bung has torn a few times and needed to be replaced due to oil going everywhere. Does this mean I have a lot of blow-by or is this normal?

Useful info by the way, thanks.
