06 FE650 cylinder head installation problem

Good day gents...and ******, I just had the almighty exhaust valve spring brake on me. I replaced them all with a set from Taffy and the installation went just fine. However, when putting the whole thing back together, I noticed that the piston gets stuck at TDC while trying to kick it over. it takes a bit more force than usual to get it to kick over. I haven't actually tried to start as it felt wrong when testing. That said, if I loosen up the head bolts, the engine cranks over fine, no sticking no nothing. As soon as I get a slight tension back on those bolts the problem reoccurs. Keep in mind that the cylinder head cover was also removed and problem still persists. There is no interference with the valves or the left side engine cover and my kick starter is working fine.

I greatly appreciate any feedback

cheers

Simon

How is your valve adjustment?
When you say it wont go past TDC, is it stuck, or just difficult. You may want to recheck your valve timing as well.

a) if you are kicking it with the top cover off, it will be hard to get past tdc...your valves are closed.
2) if its hard to kick past tdc with the cover on, valves properly adjusted, more than likely the auto decomp is not working: prolly the spring came undone.

Thx for the reply guys, Cylinder head cover off and spark plug off, the crank just stops at TDC (when the head is torqued down at 50 NM as prescribed or even with just a 1/4 turn tightness on the bolts). With the Spark plug off, compression should not be a factor at this point. I can get through the stiking point if I really stand on the kick starter but it is more than a usual kick and it feels and sounds very clunky...not a usual feel. It feels like something is binding. I will recheck again to make sure.

Timing is good
With the head cover on, valve adjustments are good (as prescribed)
Auto decompression spring is fine but has never worked well on this bike, even after replacing it. Kicking it over is usually a breeze (relatively speaking). I rarely use the electric starter.

Thx again

hello simon

please remove the head and check the internal diameter of the head gasket. i don't know your sirname but maybe you bought it from me. just check it and come back to me with a PM and i'll talk you through what to do?

don't attempt to start it please.

regards

Taffy

HI Taffy, I only bought the springs from you through ebay a few weeks ago, no gasket. I use to be the Husaberg dealer in Victoria BC and had some gaskets left over. It is possible I might have put a 450 gasket on.....good thinking....if it is the case, I sure wasn't paying attention....I will take it off right now and get back to you.

Thx

Simon

Goal......thx Taffy, you are a god sent. Wrong head gasket. The worst thing is that I can only blame myself...;o) lol. I will post of the outcome once I get a new and proper gasket.

Thx again to all and have a great weekend...or what is left of it.

Simon
