Hi guys, i own a 06 fe450 and it became hard to start. Had to hold throttle whe. It did start as it would not idle. I brought the bike to my mechanic and he checked it. He said one exhaust valve spring on the right side has broken.

Now, is that a common failure?

Thanks

Very common failure but not at 96 hours. Usually after 200 hours or more the exhaust spring will break.

Suggest that you remove the head and look to replace the two exhaust valves. my experience is that the percussion that has been going through the valves has really, really hurt them. about 20-50% of the valves break the heads off with the new valve springs whether they are DVSK or Std.

suggest 2 new exhaust valves and the DVSK, a HG and you'll need a cam chain because they are usually soft link only fitment.

while you are there I would upgrade the auto decomp spring and maybe just do a pair of cam bearings which are cheap enough. check the tasppet pads for cupping.

Any machining on the valve seats need done when doing this? I dont mind spending some dollars on this, but time is something i dont have to send the head. Leaving for a one year trip on the 13th of july. Need this done way before...

Anyone have the part # for the head gasket? The number i get online in parts fiche doesnt seem to be the good one as it would be 3$ and called a valve cover gasket. This number is also discontinued and my local ktm dealer

80036053000

My 06 650 also broke the exhaust valve spring at 90 or so hours with previous owner. No other damage and a single was replaced. Im close to 150hrs now. Running good.
Taffy has mentioned the spring can go with or without additional problems.
