'05 FS650E Spark Characteristics

So, I put a Trail Tech Vapor speedo/tach on the bike and set the spark rate to 1 per revolution. The user manual for the Vapor states that some bikes may fire more often above a certain rpm. This appears to be the case with my bike because above around 6K rpm the displayed revs change rather dramatically. Like from 6K to 10K then 12K with very little additional audible change in engine rpm. Anyone know exactly what the spark characteristics are throughout the rpm range of the motor?

i have fitted the exact same trailtech vapor to my 05 fs650e and set it to 1 like you have and am having no problems it reads correctly. it moves quickly from about 5500 rpm to about 8000 rpm as thats were the cam cums in. i have the shift light set at 8500 rpm and have never revved it harder than that. how have you got the coil pickup set up ?

On mine, I can't even reach (or even get close to) max revs before the RPM display is off scale. I'v got the red wire wrapped around the spark plug wire 5 times and then taped.

i used the direct coil connection method
1 insert the red half of the sensor wire into the spade connector that connects the stator wire to the coil.

2 properly ground the other wire this is very important

then go back into the head unit and reprogram the spark rate to 1 and then perform the two button reset <left>+<mode>

let me know how you get on :D

I tried the direct attachment to the coil method, at the spade connector. I got no tach measurement at all. The spade connector wire actually goes to the CDI box, not the stator (so says the wire diagram of the shop manual), so I figured that was why I wasn't getting anything on the display. I used the red button reset on the back, maybe that was the problem.

Did you strip the red wire before wrapping it around the spade connector? I didn't when I tried that.

i suggest you try again with the direct to coil method but this time strip the red wire. i also tried the wrap around the ht lead and got erratic reading from the rev counter

if you want to persist with the wrap around the ht lead then coil the red wire at lest 10 times around the ht lead and make sure is not on the part of the ht lead that has the extra insulation

let me know what happens please
Cheers Matt

Well, I stripped the red wire and attached it to the spade connector of the coil. The readings were worse. Fully of scale as soon as I blip the throttle. Matt, how are you powering the Vapor? I'm running it via the yellow AC wire that comes on to run the lights only when the motor is running. But I noticed that when the lights are off the rpm readout jumps about 2K rpm versus when the lights are on. I'm thinking the AC power source could be the problem. Also, where did you ground the black wire for the Tach.?

I powered my vapor from the wires that powered the stock unit i just cut the plug of the stock and transplanted it to the vapor. I also connected direct to the bat and i worked.

I earthed the black wire to the bolt that holds the coil in place . also make sure you have the vapor set to read 1 pulse per stroke

this must be bugging the crap out off you. hope this helps
