I'm looking to find the easiest way to get 17's on my FE550E. Is there a "factory" set up with adapters for brakes etc?
Thanks
Tom

Do what I did...go to a KTM dealer, and order a setup from them... The spacers, brakes, sprockets, bearings...it's all the same as a KTM of 2004 up...

I put on Pirelli Tires... 17X3.25 frt rim and a 17X4.5 rear...fits like a glove. Got it all set up with a full set of discs, sprockets and spacers, so I have a 20 minute swap from dirt to street!

Rich.

There was a question about front axle diameter between models or years, but I think it was prior to 2004?

A SM bike with the 550 motor in it would be sweet!

It's a shame you have to convert a FE frame with the dirt brakes. That motor would be awesome in a FS frame with the big radial brakes.

Call Dan @ MotoXotica. Tell him Dale sent you. :)

Does the chain chew the side of the 5" rear rim or has the distance increased from the c/l of the bike to the chain? The 4.25" ones are close enough!

Hi Brad,
I have yet to have a problem with the 5" rear.

Dale

Thanks Dale. There was one "aftermarketed" bike in the shop that I got my wheels from that had the lip of the rim almost chewed off! Can't rember what make it was or what size rim it was though.

Thanks Guys! Where I'm riding (The big track at Willow Springs) brakes won't be as much of an issue as TALL gearing.

I'll be interested to hear how the stock FE front brake does on the big Willow Springs track. That FE550 motor will be a lot of fun on the pavement. It spins up like a 450 and has most of the pull of a 650.

Another fun one will be to see who puts a FE550 motor in a FS frame with that big FS front brake.

Enjoy.

might wanna take a look at my Sig.......I'd put a 310 mm setup on that bike for sure....ridden at track speeds those stock mx brakes will cook and fade....btw the orange bike guys use all the same part numbers...

So do tell, how does your 550SM compare to the 650SM? Have you had a chance to ride both?

I haven't had the pleasure of riding the 550 motor yet but I always hear great things about it.

On my '05 FS650C I don't have any problems with chain clearance with wide tires and rim, but there is a minor issue with exhaust to tire clearance (nothing a spacer won't cure). By the way, I'd be suprised if you DON"T have brake fade issues at Willows "big" track, you might comsider upgrading to the 310mm rotors with the 4 pot calipers, yer gonna be flyin' out there!

I have ridden a couple different 650's on a Kart track as well flat trackin....
I have also raced against a 501......I also spent a short time on a small bore Berg......all factory SM's....mine started out as a FS400 and got the 550 6 speed upgrade not long after it hit the dealer floor.....The 650 has some torque, the 550 seems to have a fuzz less........the 650 doesn't like to be revved at all, they really need to be short shifted, which is hard when the guy beside you is revving the piss out of his machine.....the 650 builds deceiving speed, at low rpms.......
When you come out of a corner on the 550 and pin the throttle the bike just flat pulls from the bottom all the way to a high scream, no flat spots and with no huge excitement.....The 550 is faster and easier to race on a track...the 550 pulls harder no question, but lacks that initial grunt....
The 501 (converted MX bike) is a fast bike and has similar traits to mine just not as powerful........The Husabergs are so fast and handle so well they require so much less energy to ride fast.... As for my KX 500...?? after a rain race I'd be alot more tired and drained trying to keep greeny upright.....ok ranted enough

I also only have great thing to say about the 550. The 650 is, to me, a boring motor in regards to racing. The 550 really is such a great combination of the 450 and 650 it's hard to beat for a normal punter. Lots of low-down grunt as well as mental top-end.

At the moment I actually have 2 550 SMs since I really love that motor. One stocker and 1 factory tuned racer. The factory is so easily revved it's amazing. It just keeps on going. It lacks a few percent of the just-above-idle-torque but boy, when it gets going... 8O
