I rode my 450 today on my Hare scramble/grass track. To keep the front from diving when decelling, I installed 4.6 springs and ran the stk 80/250 spring in the back. After a few laps I softened the fork compression 4 clicks and the high speed on the shock by half a turn. It seems very good, but was a little harsh on braking bumps and chopy corners.

The track is hard pack clay, bentonite to be exact and can get blue groove, single track for about half of it, similar to the "Sovereign trail" in Moab, and flat wide off camber for the rest of the grass track. The grass track has a couple 2nd gear corners but mostly 3/4 gear.

I had dropped the fork all the way to the lowest line on the tube. It turns in on anything but it is a little dicey on downhill braking bumps.

After installing a 71-96/260 spring for experiment, I am in a quandry. The progressive spring really holds a line better, soaks up the chop better, but looses the back easier on fast sweepers, but does not drop into a rut without serious committment. If I couldget the best of both worlds....

I think there is more testing needed.

btw rider weight approx 240 plus gear, 30 mm static sag, 112 mm race sag both springs

i need .46 and i weigh 200lb's fella. so i'm wondering if you should have gone to .48s. lesmoto had a set for sale and i tried to get them so that they were at splat's upon arrival. sold already!

if you try the .48s and they work better i will have the .46s off you like a shot!

this 'tipping of the balance' may help you decide on that rear spring?

at present i have .44s with 1" spacers preloading them.

The downhill braking bumps could be a compression issue... or even a rebound issue.

That is a PDS1 you are trying, I would think for your weight you would want atleast a PDS3.

Good luck!

I'm going to believe your fork rebound suggestion Ajt. As far as spring rates, in my 03 I run 4.8 and a 85/111 but the dampening has been stiffened considerably since then, some in 04 and more again this year. I'll give up what I learn next time I'm out.

thanks gents

Fryguy,

For what it is worth, I felt that the 05 Fe450 and Fe550 are suspended perfect in stock trim. But then again I am a puny 190lbs.

I thought so too, it cornered well etc, but once I rode more here at home, I found that on steep descents, the fork dived too much and I lost stability.

you are aware that the head angle has been steepened by 1.5 degrees? this will add 5% weight to the front of the bike so that if it was say 110lb front and 120lb rear it may now be equal.

then you add the weight of a lardy bugger like you up the front end and that's another 110/120 equaled out.

so this isn't perhaps a good time to go to an even softer spring. just a little extra thought.

BTW you can actually check this by putting first the front wheel and then the back wheel on a set of bathroom scales. keep the bike level with a 2" block of wood under the other end to the scales.

it's irrelevant what your two steeds weigh. IT'S THE RATIO OF THEIR WEIGHT!

when i road raced my ducati F2 pantah it started out weighing 430lbs. in the end i had it weighing less thean the factory bike at 268lbs.

however when i started, it was 42/58% front to rear and when i'd finished it was 55/45% front to rear.

husabutt is measuring it all up for me sometime as well.

We have found out tha progressive rate springs do not work more oil and some times just adding a tuch of heavery oil does the trick. When changing the high speed you have to also reajust the slow speed it is better to feel good on 75% of the track and may be not so good on the other 25% some times we do have to move our fat butts a little from back to front of the seat.

Thanks Cody

Yes a trade off is often made, I was hoping I might find the illustrius holy grail. The progressive to funky and the 80 is more predictable and the only real complaint with it is that is wasn't that comfy settling into a corner and would climb out, so maybe a little less sag or softer low speed.

My seat has a permanent dish in the front of the foam where my fat as sits and stays, its like velcro, who needs one of those stinkin' factory stepped seats!!!

I have since softened the comp on the fork two more clicks and now tried the 84 spring.

Big difference. The progressive is too "boingy". THe 84 is sweet, the bike doesn't settle as much, turns in as it should, holds the line as it should and doesn't slide the back out on fast, flat sweepers.

Next the 88 to see if it is too stiff or..

what's an 80 or an 84 or an 88? is that front, back or your *** fryguy?

What did these mods do for you? Shortening the shock should rake it out some and then more sag does it again, does your tight tree prowess get lost in the process?

taffy

80/84/88 are straight rate springs, but you knew that. My @$$ is big, take care the next time you try and kick it. I'm figerin ouwt yo tipe, over therr cross thu wuter, spitn insults, me and my bro Bobzilla are onta yu

Taff

No I didn't, but I was blissfully unaware all season long that I should have. With the 46/84 combo it was unbalanced for your style of riding. I do think that with that heavy of spring in the 05, the high speed dampening is then too harsh.

Your 02 might be better with those rates.

i've found out recently that the valving for the ktm's has changed to that for a straight rate spring for '05 and onwards. this should mean longer needle and more progression in the damping as it reaches the bottom of the stroke.

how this adds up with the progressive SPRING i'm not sure. that's two items getting stiffer the further into the stroke you go.

pre '05s were shimmed for straight rate i think. next time you have a word with the factory boys could you find out please?

i have gone to 48s front and i have the same PDS4 as you at 85/111 and it's getting better and better all the time. i've also purchased a SR 9.5 for the rear. tried the same spring on a KTM 520 and it felt lovely except on long sweepers where it fell through and did a 'whap! whap!'.

PM me with all you know. i need you to do a brain dump!
