04 Vs 05 Engines

As far as i can work it out these are the published differences between the 04 and the 05 engine. Now we just have to work out the difference between them with respect to the evolution of the part.

1. 800 30 058 060 Piston Cooling jet. This is a new addition to the 05 model. Don't have to be Einstein to work out this one.

2. The 2005 clutch inspection cover gasket, 800 30 027 100 has been superseded by 800 30 027 100.

3. The part number for all crankshafts, 450, 550 and 650 has changed. In the case of the 650 where it has had the capacity reduced i understand the change but not the 450 and 550.

4. For the 05 a revised oil scraper ring for 100mm bores is newly added.

5. Where the 04 had a common cylinder head for all model, the 05 has a separate head for the FS-S and FC 450 models. Obviously this reflects the fact that these models have Ti valves and corresponding valve springs.

6. 590 36 026 044 (int) & 590 36 025 044 (exh) valve guides have been changed to 590 36 026 100 (exh) & 590 36 025 100 for the 05 models.

7. For the 05 models, unique part numbers have been struck for the valve springs where Ti valves are used. (FS-S 450 & FC 450)

8. The 2004 model used head gasket 810 36 044 100. This has been changed to 810 30 036 000 for the 05 model. Close inspection of the 2 gaskets shows a difference in the water gallery bypass holes.

9. The cam chain tensioner which is common to all capacities has been changed for the 05 model.

10. Timing chain and camshaft gear has new part numbers. In the case of the chain, a DID unit is used for the 05 model whereas the 04 model used a IWIS chain. This will explain the difference in the chain number but not the gear.

If anyone can add any further information then it would be kindle appreciated.

Dunno about all that ^ but I have just ridden my 04 fs650 back to back with an 05 and all I can say is....thank god I didn't hang on the extra few weeks and pay the extra 1K for the 05.
On a totally tarmac, tight n twisty track there was no 'real' difference between the 2 apart from the brakes where the 05 had a tad more feel/control but then I always thought the 6 pots had 'too' much power anyway.
I actually lapped quicker on my 04 but that might just be because I'm used to it

The 05 cranks have an oil port

The newly added oil scraper it to deal with the extra oil on the wall from jet in the piston and the oil passage in the crank.
