Hi there guys,
just decided to replace the leaking seals in the forks, noticed fluid has gone a milky grey colour, looks like water in the fluid, have seperated the top and bottom of the fork, thought I would undo the 19mm nut on the base of the leg and give the internals a clean out. The nut just seems to spin, do you need a special tool or technique to get the internals out.? Have replaced seals before but never accessed the internals of the fork before.May be best to just leave it assembled and pump fluid through and drain it until fluid is clean?
Any help on this would be appreciated.
Regards,

A rattle gun, air or electric is the way to go. If you leave the spring in and cap on you can hols them upside down and get someone to push down on it to put some extra pressure on the assembly to stop it spinning.

to clean them out properly you need to take them apart there are usually a heap of small metal particles from spring and shim wear and tear that gets embedded in soft bushings and the piston band, its nice to get all that crap out. same with the draining idea its ok but it won't clean them out as good. there will be a collection of gunk in the lower sections, its black stuff off springs and a mixture of water and dust that gets in over time.

if the forks are in the bike you can use a strap to compress the spring then undo the nut, don't allways need a rattle gun particulary if the've been apart before but nothing beats one if its available.
