'04 CCT adjustment O.U.T. WHY?

ok folks

did my third '04 450 on friday. only here for starting problems so i did my usual tricks but i took the 'zorst off and thought i'd check the cam chain tensioner (CCT).

that's on a hunch see?

what did i find but a CCT w/o any adjustment left? aha!!! i thought, i bet i know what happens now and so i proceeded to take the old chain out and fed a new one in and at the same time had another new one on the bench awaiting.

because it's an '04 all chains are IWIS in this BTW, well the old chain was in PERFECT NIK!

so i fed it back on and tried the CCT afresh and sure enough all the adjustment went straight away.

the chain was great, like new, not a sign of stretch or wear. as thomas has pointed out, the '04s were the only year to get this really expensive chain which costs double that of the DID chain supplied ever since.

so this it the third time i have checked an 'o4 and they are completely out of adjustment? this time i welded a nut on the end of the tensioner to give the engine 6-8 clicks which i think will last the life time of the engine.

MY QUESTION
WOULD SOME OF YOU CARE TO CHECK YOUR '04S AND THE TENSIONER? btw, i DIDN'T make a mistake and did remove the bolt and tensioner spring first!

Taffy

my 04 650 was the same after 50+ hours no adjustment left. i put in a new chain and i looked OK after that. I think i have to check it again ill post back when I'm done.

Hi Taffy,

Your post has just coincided with me rechecking mine, just over 4000 miles on a new DID chain. The tensioner had seven clicks when I fitted the new chain it now has 9. I think you might say it's just bedded in.
I have fitted softer valve springs softer cam and less pressure on the tensioner by shortening the spring, could be the answer to a longer chain life.

Sparks.

whosa

i think you know what my point is so i can't see quite where that comes into it. good idea - totally unrelated to the point i'm making.
