Managed to snap the bottom off of the exhaust valve spring. Have any of you guys heard of this happening before? I couldn't get any warranty on it because they reckon I've overreved it, which I didn't but anyway that's what I thought a rev limiter was for?

Luckily the valve didn't drop, even after tow starting and riding another 60kms home. Had a drag with a XR650R on the way back and still managed to hit 172kph even with the valve flopping all over the show.

You are really lucky. I broke a valve spring on my 2000 'FE501E. It broke in 2 places near the bottom, like yours. I was putting along at about 3000 rpm, and the engine just stopped. I clutched it . I pushed the bike 1.4 miles, to a power line access road, and then walked another 4.5 miles or so to a spot where my wife could reach in her SUV.

I did the tear down/reassembly, and it still cost me over $600US for the parts and head work. They had to replace a guide and the seat. I replaced the stem seals, all valve springs, the spring retainer, keepers and the valve that got bent a little by the piston.

How many hours did your Berg have on it? Mine had 347.4 hours.

From my earlier post:

Hi,

Last week when I visited my dealer there were three -04 650 Supermotard bikes with broken valve springs. They crack in the lower part but luckily, for these guys, the valve didn't damaged the cylinder.
Seems to be a design or quality problem...

One of these bikes had broken the springs two or three times.
This dealer considered it as a quality problem.

The things an ex-demo bike that's been in the shop for about 10 months so no doubt it's had the bejesus flogged out of it. It never had the speedo on it while it was in the shop so I don't know how many Kms it's done all up, but I've put only about 10hrs and 650kms on it and that has just about been all highway cruising.

Anyone got any ideas on how I could stop it from happening again?, maybe a less aggressive cam profile?

04 Valve springs (all displacements) are of the same design as that of earlier Husaberg conical springs, however, said springs do appear to be supplied by a different manufacturer as the surface finish has changed. Rates are the same as earlier models.

Since all reports of broken springs have been that of the 04 650 I suspect the new camshaft is further taxing the valvetrain. I shall look into it a bit deeper when time allows.

Best Regards,
Dale
