04 550 runs rough for first mile

Ever since I got my motor rebuilt, I have a problem with it popping and complaining for the first mile or so. It gets to the point where it just won't go unless I let it idle and clear out. Then it runs fine 98% with a few pops here and there. I was told that it was because I was riding harder and the case vent was putting oil into the carb from sitting after the previous ride. Does this sound correct? If so, can someone point me to the pictures/parts list to cap off the frame and re-route the vents?
It never did this before the rebuild. Maybe I should get a new 570 (if $$ would allow)Thanks, John

This shouldnt happen. What you want to look for is oil pooling in the carb intake boot. Next time before you ride, remove the air filter and have a look down into the boot leading to the carb. See if there is oil pooling there.

I did that before yesterdays ride and it still did it. After yesterdays ride, I cleaned it up again and wiped out the entire airbox. I'll have to pull it again today and see if anything pooled up. It should be dry.

i'd say your carb is starving at low revs and it's particularly noticeable when cold. blow out the choke jet and just do the whole carb while you're there.

It starts fine and the choke circuit works normally. And it idles fine all the time, warm, cold (after choking the start) and when its having its tantrum. It acts like its the main that's the problem. Like it is sucking something like oil into the main. Once it's gone comes back to life.

Classic symptom of a clogged pilot jet.................

As Taffy recommends, pull the carb off and clean the whole thing out well. Be careful not to get any carb cleaner on the vacuum release plate on the front of the slide, it has a very delicate O ring. You really don't want to get carb cleaner on any of the rubber pieces on the carb.

I highly recommend Berryman's carb cleaner. Wear good solvent gloves, this stuff is the last of the gnarly stuff.

It did sit for a while when the motor was being done. So I'll give it a try. Thanks Guys!

I finally went thru the carb, twice, and it did the same thing. Then I noticed a rip in my TPS wiring boot . As I looked at it a bit more, the TPS black wire was badly broken. A slight pull and it broke completely. Its broken right against the the TPS. I called the shop who quoted me about $250 for the TPS itself. I guess I try and fix it with solder and epoxy.

Hi Jmumme,

If you warm the face of the TPS where the wires come out with a heat gun you can remove the original epoxy and unsolder the broken wire.

Sparks.

I managed to repair the TPS. I used a razor knife to shave down the plastic/epoxy/rubber to expose a bit of the wire. I looked good when I was done. Then I set it with an ohm meter. I was a little dissaponted to find the gas tank hits my repair job. It must have had a much tighter bend. It still ran screwy.. Then I found another broken wire. It was the green one from the Ignition, that connects on top of the head. The bike would die when I moved it. Fixed that one, then...
I changed the oil, while wiping down the frame, and found a crack in the frame on the right side in front of the footpeg. It looks like it goes all the way around.
Not a great day. But its running alot better now..
Thanks all for the help.
