03 FE450. One to avoid or not?

Hi chaps, I myself have a 05 FE450 which is awesome. A mate of mine wants one but there are none for sale in the uk. I have however found an 03 FE450 on eBay which the guy wants too much money for but that's another story. Anyway I know about the dodgy ignitions and other problems on the earlier bergs and wanted to know how to tell if its one of them or a good one.

well for a start the '03 bike was a 400 so id say that should ring an alarm bell that the owner doesnt actually know what he's got.

thought saying that i bought by 03 bike as a 501 which then turned out to be a 400 so maybe its a common thing for those that dont know much about bikes to get it wrong.

03 you have 400, 501 and 650. then thery were some 470's made but not sure if it was 03 or not.

found my 03 fine, theyd had a few years to sort the issues out, though the best thing you can do to it is ditch the dellorto carb and fit an fcr39.

like any bike it really does depend how its been looked after

If its the tidy one which he's asking 1950 for its actually appears to be a 04 450

I thought the 2004 models had a differnt speedo.And the rearspring and kickstarter don't seem of a 2004 either.
Spring was white,and kick was differnt looking.Seems it has some 2005-2006 parts build in.
Frame and stickers are 2004.
Come to think of it:
Maybe it's just a late 2004 model :roll:

Now you mention the few oddities what forks are those?

When you read the description it says about spare this that and the other so no wonder he's asking 1950 seems like he replaced a lot of parts.

If your considering this I'd either get hold of him to ask what's been done or a comprehensive email if its all been put together well would be a tidy bike.

The frame / rear brake cylinder guards are missing. That explains why the paint is in such good condition in that area.

I had thoughts about the year too as the speedo is a later model than mine. Poss 05-06. Still if it can be bought for 1500 then I think it's worth a punt. He'll never get the £2450 buy it now price

If its got a dellorto carb and SEM ign it's an 03,FCR and a kukusan ign it's a 04

dont need to look that closely as its got the non sem ignition cover and the split clutch cover that the 03 bikes didnt have.

i had an 03.

No I didn't. It's for a mate and left it up to him to call. No way he'll be paying that price though
