I just picked up a new 03 fe400e and the throttle return spring is much lighter than my 02FX470E Throttle return spring Id like my 400's throttle to have the same feeling as my 470's can these springs be interchanged?I looked at the parts manual and they only have one part number for all the carb series? little help please.

Dellorto provide 3 different springs for the PHM:

0.7kg/70mm
1.1kg/70mm
1.4kg/70mm

The Dellorto factory part numbers are, respectively:

8550
8532
9389

is it at all posible that the action is reduced on the 2003 bike since it is new?the 2002 bike may have enough wear on the slide and the carb body that pull is heavier.also is it posible the 2002 throttle cable may have more drag than the new bike since it has had a few years to become less new?dan.

The 470 was just about new this spring. right now it has less than 25 hours on her. the 470 spring is heavier!

so you are saying the 400 has heavier throttle pull than your 470?did you buy this bike from baldys? he is a fairly knowledgable tweaker.perhaps he did something to alter it?is the clutch pull lighter on the 400 than the 470?i have always noticed that husabergs took alot of effort to twist the throttle, except for the 2004 models with the fcr carb.i have a 39 mm fcr carb that is supposed to be here tomorrow that i will be selling incase you want to sweeten up your berg.dan.

Oops caught me there. 470 is the heaver throttle spring. On the clutch pull I'll have to get back to you on that?

Dan,

Would you be able to feel a difference with the clutch since it is a hydraulic? Is there a way to adjust the pull on these?

Sincerely,
Sandskipper

keith, there is no way to adjust the hyd.clutch that i know of.there are different sizes of clutch pistons avail which could alter the feel.the 400 comes with softer clutch springs than a 550.that would affect clutch pull.one day i had a chance to try a 400 and a 470 and the clutch pull on that 400 was very light.i have arc levers on my bikes and it seems to decrease the effort required to pull in the clutch.not sure if it is cause the lever is a little longer or some difference in the angle or my vivd imagination.i have a new 2003 501 on the floor and the throttle pull is something that makes you take notice, the 2004/ 550 throttle pull is almost insignificant. :?: dan

Update on my son’s 03 FE400E throttle spring. I picked up a 02 FX470E spring from my dealer put it in the 400. Now both bike have the same throttle feel. Stiffer like the 470.

Anyone had problems with the PHM sticking open due to manifold vaccuum on the big bores when using a light return spring? I would dearly love to lighten mine but would not cope well with any nasty surprises.

70marlin - You're out of the US, aren't you? If you were closer I'd be interested in your cast-off.

Ya in the USA, Michigan, Jackson to be exact. If you were in my area we'd ride and I give it to you. The spring was cheap like $7 usd. Ride on fellow down under Berger!
