I just recently bought this bike. It is an 03 FE 501 with 67 hrs on it according to the computer. The bike ran fine when I parked it 2 days ago and now cannot get it to start for anything. Put new plug, oil and filter, and cleaned the air cleaner. I know Im getting fuel to the carb. Is this a common problem or am I just special??? Also, how are these bikes on services?? ANy engine problems or anything. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks
Travis

Spark?

Hello.
Do you have a spark at the sparkplug? if not it is perhaps the famous SEM stator failure.
Search about SEMstator in the forum.

RE: Spark?

ok dude welcome to UHE and firstly where yo from? i have no idea (te! he!).

it will almost certainly be the way that you are trying to start it. unfortunately, while you are learning, you are also probably flooding it. nearly every new husey owner fluffs starting them.

firstly, you have to kick down like a cobra striking! FAST!!

secondly, only try choke for 2 kicks max before turning it off.

if you had a good idle before you stopped it then you need to leave the throttle alone but catch the engine after it has started.

here are some of the things that make them start better

new atomiser and needle as well as a smaller #40 choke jet
a nice iridium plug. the denso IXU24 is by far a more superior plug to the NGK
tappets, sorry but get them checked now and know that they are done. they are in the poor starting area of the doc.
stand on a step with your right leg.
hold the brake on.
when you do get it running, don't idle in the yard, burn all that fuel off with a run,
come back, set the carb, strobe the ignition. look in the doc - the ignition timing is wrong on them.

RE: Spark?

Hi Monsterchav - have a look at these posts - the list EVERYONE gives "technique - valves - jetting - auto decomp - stator" all sound very daunting and you'll try everything not to do them, but with the help of the UHE it's all very easy (even if you pay for some of it).
and once done it's brilliant. These bikes have such power & character.

I'm still messing about with my e-start but I can guarantee that I can kick start it any time in 2 - 3 kicks from the seat. I'm only 5'8"

RE: Spark?

Hello all. Thank you for your input. I was ******** and somehow got water into the carb. Drained the carb bowl, turned on the petcocks, and she fired right up. Water was beaded up on the concrete. I had debated this earlier but ruled it out figuring that kicking it that much would have ran the water through. Absolutely love this bike but am worried about the maintenance. Im coming from an RM 250. Due I need to be constantly checking valves and what not??? And also, do the bikes prefer a certain oil weight???

Thanks Again
