Hi guys my newly acquired 470 seems to turn over fine on the starter with the decomp pulled but just seems to spin when its released do they do this when the battery doesnt have enough juice or is it a knackered sprag as its seems to be an intermittent problem ive had bikes that did this when the battery was on its way out i know my battery is eak but am having trouble getting hold of a ytz7s!

Does it act like this when the bike is cold or warm?

My 01 501 would display the symptoms you describe when cold, but would be fine when the motor was warmed up.

More than likely it's the sprague clutch. Not too hard to fix, just a bit of a pain.

ill check when its warm later is the sprague under the lh casing any special tools need making?

Hi Billinjah,

Yes mine did the same, sprag clutch, you need a clutch holding tool easy to make from old steel clutch plates and the tool to hold the gears while undoing the clutch hub.

Sparks.

cool i have a nut gun so prob wont need to hold it. are there any on line fiches for the or a good place to get a manual?

ok it starts fine off the button when warm do the clutches work when hot but not when cold?
(not that i want to start it off the starter when cold but more want to know if something is going to wear and stop working)

bellinjah

where you from?

the sprague gives up on cold first but continues for warm. i think it collapses under pressure and not waer ultimately. and we are talking pressure when cold...

thats great cheers for the manual link, taffy im in bedford but my old man lives in over just down the road from you. ill order the sprague and bung it on might even start on the button from cold.

Billijah,

buying the new sprauge will just net you another worn spauge, the button is a RE-start and not an e-start. The sprauges are not strong enough to spin it from cold consistently on the 03 and earlier models. If it starts fine when warm, I would just leave it be until it doesn't.

as said, please bear in mind what two of us have said. it is very tempting to use it all the time and then a month later it will 'run through' just like the old one.

you can buy all the bits to upgrade it but i don't think it's worth it so just bear the above in mind.

the village of Over, know it well sir. have a freind runs a plumbers from there and the MG owners club just down the hill.

good luck.

Taffy
