My bike starts just fine with the kick starter, but once warm it will not start with the electric. I put a new battery in it, and it turns over just fine, but still no start. When I bought the bike used, it would start with the electric once hot, but now it wont. Please help......before I sell it and continue riding my CRF450.

Check the needle and needle jet, I'll bet they are both worn. This causes the carb to gradually get richer and richer at idle and just off of idle as the wear continues.. Very hard to e-start when hot. You continue to correct with the fuel screw and end up with something that won't start and ruins very poorly from idle up to 1/8 throttle. When it gets this way, you can sometimes get it to start if you very slightly open the throttle just a crack while cranking it.Let us know what you find and do.

JMHO,

Joe

Check your valve adjustment and idle speed as these both need to be spot on for your e-start to work properly.

Shootinman PM'd me with a question about his e-start slipping when he tried to use it. I thought I would post my suspicion since there are so many new members that have missed out on early discussions on this subject.

First of all, if you use the search window and tools, you can generally find many threads on the subject you need info on and increase your overall knowledge base relative to the Berg and how this web site can help you.

Now back to the slipping e-start! Refer to the attached page 34 from the 02 Parts Manual.

If your 01-03 e-start motor spins but the engine doesn't turn over then the item 8 'Gear Wheel Slip Clutch' is probably slipping.

If item 8 isn't slipping them item 10 'Clutch Mechanism Free Wheel' is probably worn and slipping inside of items 9 and 12. Some dealers will sell the item 10 separate from item 9 and 12 but others won't. Sometimes its just better to buy them together along with item 11 because items 9 and 12 also wear and to make sure you get it right the first time.

You will need to do the analysis to find out which parts need to be replaced. Refer to the 03 Workshop Manual, which is available as a download to the left in the Yellow column under Down Loads, parts lists.

Any more questions, let us know. ':)

Regards,

Joe

Hi,
I think he told us that his starter turns over just fine.
So I think his problem is to be found in the camshaft respectively the decomp weight.
It´s also a long known problem that cured a lot of 2001/2002 models switching from beeing only a restart engine to a cold starter.

ups, now I see, he told you in a PM that his e-start was slipping when he tried to use it...
ok, now we have other circumstances.-
