:? I own a 2002 Fe 501 which starts great on the kick start but will not have it on the starter motor, it turns over fine but just won't start. I have been told that the carb, auto decompressor and valve clearences have to spot on, is this true? I am worn out after ever ride now, must get it sorted can anybody help please.

Hi Rid:

The 01-03 e-start system seems to marginal at best. However some have had great success after "blueprinting" and tweaking all parts of the system. Some seem to have been the benefactor of random component selection. The new higher capacity 04 550/650 starter motor may be an overall good solution. Here's the thread Scully and myself are working on and the results will be posted as soon as the additional parts arrive.

Hi,

maybe the reason could also be found in an old stator.
As I changed my stator of my 02 FE 501, which still worked,
to a new one of a model 03 - it worked miracles.
From that moment the magical button had a real function, not only to be used as re-starter!
It worked in every situation. I wonder why. I think the spark
was more powerful. The same consequence now with the kokusan ignition!

Hirbman:

When you changed stators did you also replace the flywheel or use your old one.

Hi,

oh no, I changed everything: complete ignition from KTM 520 exc: stator, ignition coil, stator cover and the flywheel from a KTM LC4 with e-start.
Sorry, I don´t now the official description for those models in the USA.
The european indication is LC4 and EXC.
The modification wasn´t that easy but it was successful. You can see some pics in my gallery.

What was the main objective in changing the ignition? Was it to add more flywheel weight or a lighting coil? Had you burned through a few stock stators previously?

HI,

the main reason for changing to Kokusan was
that in the last 3 years of riding Husaberg I had 4 failed
SEM stators. This thing is really fit for scrap.
In all seriousness, the stator is one of the most needed spare part,
and it can´t be that it costs about 200€ what is nearly the same in
Dollar. That´s annoying.
To get one used stator on ebay or somewhere else is almost impossible.
So you have to buy a new one at your dealer.

best regards
