01 FS650E, deleting starter, battery...

I've got little patience for this weak starter mess, and I think it would be nice to have the extra space for a decent catch can, packed lunch, etc. So, while my motor is out being repaired and updated I'd like to do a little cleaning up of the wiring.

I've removed the starter, solenoid, and battery. It seems that my bike only ran the starter from the battery, nothing else. Everything else seems to be running from AC, as nothing works until the motor is started.

So, can I remove the voltage regulator? What else can come off if I don't need any DC on the bike?

And, I've got a brown wire, doesn't look original, running between the left hand switch housing and the negative on the battery. I'm guessing that's a kill button ground? Can I re-route to a good chassis ground?

I've searched posts and looked at the doc, but I can't seem to piece this together.

Thanks,
Dennis

I am no electrical go-to person but I believe you will need to keep the voltage regulaor as it regulates the AC power.

iirc the 01 and 02 use separate voltage regulators and rectifiers. that means get rid of the rectifier and leave the regulator. but if your engine is out and being repaired, why not do the upgrades so that it will start on the button?

sorry but what a load of tosh!

the doc more than explains how to get your bike started. you sound like a combination of 'toys out of pram' and 'snot fair'.

the only loser is you so why do it?

you need to visit my ebay shop and read up a bit.

i suppose to prove we are right we'll all have to explain meticulously in a coersive fashion.

Fair enough, I suppose. Let me rephrase. I'm perfectly happy kickstarting my motorcycle and my existing electric starting system is not satisfactory. Rather than spend my money and time upgrading the electrical starting system now, I've chosen to remove it from my motorcycle. My choice, then, is to remove the battery which I see as only supporting the electric starting system. I am far too lazy to read my wiring diagram and trace wires, so I've asked for some help. I have received some help, and some of Taffy's encouragement, and now I am fully prepared to modify my motorcycle.

Thanks,
Dennis

Will this work for an '08 FE450? I would like to lose the weight of the starter and the battery since I prefer to kick start the bike anyway.

I'll buy your electric start gear off you both and i even have the blanks for the cases. please get in touch if you want to profit from the conversion.

regards

Taffy

Thanks for the offer, but I will keep the gear for when I sell the bike. A future owner may want the e-start capability.

Cheers.

Must be some sort of galactic coincidence. A year ago when I mentioned deleting the starter I was nearly burned at the stake. Now two others taking it on. Very next post I look at is about adding passenger pegs for my kids. and lo there's others interested. Follow me around, I'm some sort of trend setter. I'll take the abuse for the betterment of the community :)

Taffy, I've still got all my e-start stuff if you'd be interested. Be interested in some trade for carbie bits. Mine still isn't any fun to start (great to kick, just tricky to get to fire some times).

If you have not replaced the stator, it will help with the starting....$300.00, but is sure to start in 4 or 5 kicks....I kick mine, but will eventually fix the e-start. It is my street/dual-sport bike really, so I would like the button to work....still I have put it off like the plague....I need the starter sprague, and it is rather hard to come by....one day....right now I have just bought a totally original 86 Corvette, that is cherry, and am having fun with it.....
