Would the proper way to update the starter on a 01 650 be, get an 08 650 starter part#82040001000 and I think I may need the starter bracket #82040002000 also? Any info would be appreciated! :?:

fritz:
i went thru this when i updated my '02 650. i started with an '06 honda f4i starter and found it didn't spin up well, and ended with a '99 yamaha r6. it seemed to turn the engine over faster. to get to where the start was reliable, i eventually modded the cam to use the '04-up auto decomp (dutch clog) because after replacing the original autodecomp, the new one only lasted 60 hrs before eating the lobe.
the starter is a mitsuba sm-14 and the only mod was to redrill the mount holes for the stock 650 bracket. the part of the yam starter that stuck out was used to mount the solenoid.

Hi Fritz,

i copied Neds work a on my 02 last year with the R6 starter, the other mod i had to do was shim the starter clutch to stop that slipping too much. Can't remember off the top of my head what poundage it should slip at but worth checking to make sure it doesn't slip too easily.

cheers carl

Yes, if you want to go OEM. 04+ starter and bracket. It does not guaranty that the sprag will hold, and you will most likely have to address the auto decompression device.
