'00 FE501E broken Valve spring

Hi guys...I'm glad I ended up with a no start situation. Seems my exhaust valve spring broke. I don't know when but sometime during the ride. I know what you're thinking...toast. However, I've pulled the head now..no contact was made with the piston. ALL the carbon is still on the piston, not a mark on the carbon on the valve. So...not only do I need a stator now..but I need new springs and maybe new valves jsut for fun. Which springs should I be looking at? What's this talk about double springs? It's an FE and it's running the stock cam. One of my intake valves looks like it's down in the head farther than the other. Will this be a tuliped valve? I haven't disassembled the head yet.

RE:

a valve lower than the other? = broken valve spring!

it's a DUAL valve spring kit and i believe besides kibblewhite's i'm the only one to sell them. and i do exchange stators. if the carbon on the valves stops in a straight line then that just leaves the seated faces. the exhausts are NEVER a problem. all that happens is that the tips sprawl sometimes but the problems are rarely with the exhausts.

why don't you check out that lower valve rather than ask us? would be a whole lot easier on us!!!!

RE:

Taffy, sorry to make you guess, I just didn't have the valves out of the head. The intake valves are toast. They have sunk into the head as the seating surface is worn (lip), by your description...they are higher in the head..due to the worn lip. Sorry about my description, the valves sunk into the head....when looking from the combustion chamber..of course a broken valve spring on the exhaust would have it not sitting on the seat properly. As you state, the exhaust valves look good, although they could be lapped in a bit.
How many hours do you feel the bike should have on it before I pull the whole bottom end apart? I've already had a roller tip go, now my intakes are done, should the bottom end crank bearings and balancer bearings be far off? Or would you say the bottom end last longer than one set of valves?

RE:

i'm afraid its like an old house andrew....i did the kitchen last year, the living room two years ago, the extension three years ago.

take a guess....

Taffy, Ya, yet another stupid post. Everyone must think I'm a knob. I'm opening it up now and going over everything. I'm really much more knowledgeable than my posts would reflect. More coffee required before posting. Thanks for your patience.
