hi guys, thought that most aussie berg owners would stop here for a look, so l might be able to gauge some jetting settings, if u dont mind. lve recently purchased an 04 fe 550 and seem to think it doesnt go quite as well as it should. at present the settings are as follows:
main jet - 185
pj - 45
needle - obekr , clip in the 4th position
these seem to be settings from a 650 going by the manual, apart from the main jet size (182 is standard for 550). the bike has an open end on the exhaust but that is all.
lm riding between 0 and 15degrees c and at an altitude of 300m - 1300 m above sea level.
its interesting to note that other owners from here think that main is way to rich yet bike shops here say it is ok.
so i thought it would be interesting to c what u guys run.
cheers and hope u dont mind me putting this post here as l tried it in previous forum and didnt get many responses.

the standard needle is OBDVR 3rd clip position .... 182 main ... 40 pilot jet ..

is your compression ok .... have you checked your valve clearances .. it could be time for a rebuild ...how many hours on the bike ?

hi, the compression is fine, 2400kms, with 63 hrs on it, i think it sems to be more jeting than anything else

Hi
Madpugs
I have a 05 550fe and i found the standard setting best as Whosahberg posted...

But i have lifted the needle up one groove
is your exhaust standard...?
I did try a 185 and 188 but found the bike to be a dog on WOT.

hi, the pipe is standard apart from a different end cap(more open)

I have a fe 650e 2005
here are my settings am slowly coming down on the main jet size had 182 in it might come down a little more though
Jet needle is the OBEKR on the fourth clip from the top.
Main jet is 175.
Idling jet is 45.
1.5 turns out on the mixture screw
Everything else is standard in the carburettor
High compression piston
straight through akropovic exhaust

Go smaller on the main and you will notice a big difference. If it's too small it will surge. It seems most dealers I have dealt with for both 'Bergs and KTMs jet too rich.
My 650 is running a 165 and the top end is so much better than stock now.

main air jet stock at 200 means 185 main works by producing more tourque than a smaller main.

change the main air jet from 200 to 160 or 165 and then the smaller main jets work well giving more power and more tourque without going lean at high rpm

if the main jet gets down to 150 or smaller then it needs a 155main air jet

simply put: if the smaller main jets crispen your bike up nicely and make more power but its going lean at high rpm and peak tourque is reduced then make the MAJ smaller to fix it.

stock jetting on my bike was 160main 200MAJ EKR needle clip 5 with 3 seconds squirt, it went lean at high rpm after the acellerator pump stopped squirting. the pump is a bandaid to cover the lean steady state settings needed to pass emmisions testing so I got rid of it and changed the MAJ.

same applies for the PAJ /pilot and needle, if the bike likes the needle dropped but it starts to gasp then the lean spot can be fixed with a smaller PAJ and then a smaller pilot to suit see owners DOC for taffys chart of pilots and PAJs. there possibly should be such a chart/s for the main/MAJ too.

theres not much difference between the countries it seems when everything is done properly. just MHO 1or 2 sizes bigger on the main in aust seems common. most people have salt in the cupboard a pinch or two may be needed when reading my posts on jetting.

I like caltex vortex98 over bp ultimate, they need different jetting too.

regards
Bushie
