my poor old berg blew up.

okey dokey here's my weekend. after 2 weeks of monsoonal rain, a heap of parts for my mx6 (car) finally rocked up so after spending all saturday doing an engine install and seeing the physio on friday for a dammaged disc in my back (has stopped me riding for about 2 months) I decided sundy morning that the berg was gunna play in the mud.

2 k/m down the rd my berg gets a sound to it like the exhaust has fallen off. I think no big deal I'll pull over and fix it. NUTHIN, no bolts missing, nuthing loose, no holes. so I start her up again and she's all good. about 200m further down the rd it happens again but this time a massive loss of power. After finding a safe spot to pull over I notice my left boot and leg was covered in oil. as the bike is idling no oil is spilling out, but when I throttle it up a bit there is oil pissing out of one of the bolts on the left side of the head. There are 2 bolts that hold the rocker cover on either side of a disc. The front one is leaking. But the oil is literally coming thru the bolt. It seeps from under the bolt head not where the head and cover meet. Ps there were no major holes or cracks that I could see.

any way I decide to ride home. On the highway in 6th gear at 3/4 throttle I was cruising at 58Km/h. She usually does that in 2nd.

I haven't pulled the bike down yet cause the mx6 still needs a few minor things done before she can be driven. But I thaught I'd tell ya about my sunday ride and will keep ya informed about what is wrong with the berg.

I suspect a cam sprocket bolt, etc. has come loose or perhaps the drive side cam bearing has failed and damaged the rocker cover near the front 6mm cover retaining bolt.

I have seen both .

Hope this helps.

Dale

thanks mate.

if it has carked it then I'll look at putting the 470 bigbore kit in.

unfortunately it will have to waite as I just spent a few grand putting my MX6GT back on the road, and I have a new member of the family due in june.

it's amazing how hard ya toys can kick ya in the nuts.

Wait until your new addition gets old enough to go to school & wants toys of it's own !!

It'll make your toys look like pocket change !! 8O

I took the tank and seat off last night so I could fit my haltuner back onto the car and found this

yep whoops. Any ideas on what it could be before I rip it apart?

Rockerarm, valve, valve spring, camshaft carrier bearing, camshaft follower and / or camshaft.

@ one time or another I have seen all of the above.

Pull the cover off and we shall find out for certain.

Dale

Turns out it was the rocker bearing, only problem is I can only find a small part of the bearing and it was 1/2 way down the timing chain. the local dealer said no more than $450 to replace all the parts and open the motor and make sure there's no pieces of bearing left.

are there any tricks to getting the kickstart off. it moves about 1mm then stops. Buggers me why.

i think your dealer is going to have trouble finding another cover for you. froggy in the usa had a rotten time finding one. it will come down to chasing dealers with that one and i suggest that you do the donkey work there...

dale knows more than me here but i suspect valve spring (left exhaust).

regards

Taffy

ya could be right about the covor but it's all good since I don't have the cash right away. Here's some happy snaps.

now that the motor is out and I couldn't ride (my back is still cactus) I'll do some research about the turbo conversion. let ya know how it goes.
