Keyed ignition switch.....

Is there a keyed ignition switch for the 06 fe650e? I am slowly doing a dual sport kit, switches, lights, horn, turn signals ect....all from husaberg but cant seem to find a ignition switch. KTM has one, does husaberg rely on the steering lock for theft protection only?

You can really go and buy any keyed ignition switch you like and make it work. You'll find that if you buy a cheap "replacement" ignition switch it might just be a lot cheaper than the OEM version. There is one thing to be aware of though. And that is that the OEM switch worked by earthing the orange wire when the ignition was off and cutting the circuit to on - i.e. identical to how the kill switch does its job.

I have used a road bike ignition switch on mine that I had lying around which took a little more 'wiring' but actually has ended up a lot more secure because it cuts all the important circuits from stator and battery to prevent theft. But then I'm going to be using mine around town.

Hi Simon,

Can you provide details of what you used and how you integrated it?

Like you my FS-e is going ot live on the street and I need to come up with a way to totally deenergize it when it is parked.

I am just starting into trying to figure how these bergs are wired - it appears there are two separate circuits in the lighting - 1)turn signals (always on) and 2)brakelights and head and tail lights (on only when running)

I find this weird, but I need more time to understand why this was done.

Cheers

Hey Mark,

I used a Triumph ignition switch which allows me to run the Red/Green and Black wires from the stator through it. I have left the Orange wire for the kill switch only.

Also all the wiring for the lights and horn goes throught ignition switch too.

The different circuits for the lighting are simply one rectified circuit for the lights and one regulated circuit for the horn, battery charger and I can't remember whether the regulated circuit also powers the indicators too.

What I have done is wire all lights and electrical goods from the battery and I therefore only use the regulated circuit. It means I get lights even when the engine isn't running and also stop the lights from dimming every time I put the brake on!

This also means I only use one of the yellows from the stator - each yellow is 70w - as I have a 35/35w headlight (or can use a 55/60w headlight), LED rear tail/brake light, and no turn signals.

Hope this helps,
Simon

Yes, it helps a great deal.

I have one more questions - I am knew to Bergs and I would like to know what year/model/etc would have the combined speedo and ignition switch bracket. I am trying to create a clean mount for the existing digital speedo on my 06 FS-e while adding the keyed ignition.

It looks like the 04 parts manual shows the combo bracket but I don't what the speedo unit looked like back then - it looks like the more square version like on my 03 KTM exc vs the slim one one the Berg.

Cheers and thanks

Mark

Any chance you marked up the wiring diagram to reflect an asbuilt of how you wired yours? I thought not.... :)

Well, I might just surprise you here.

I do have a wiring diagram to reflect how I wired mine, but I don't know anything about the mounts or brackets - I'm making my own

I'll put my wiring diagram in machine readable format in the next few days for ya.

My bad.... :)

I assume you mean scanning it into a pdf or metafile?

That would be great! If I do it different than you I'll document it and we can get into The Owner's Doc.

Thanks

I'll have a go through it and try to integrate what you have given me into the factory wiring schematic.

No worries,

I ought to mention that I have used an LED tail/brake light to reduce current draw.

hi im tryin to install a keyed switch as well but i just want to tap into the stator wires or the two pick up wires and i didnt really see anything on the baja design site to do that. do you know of any switches that will turn the two curcuits on and off like i want. and how many curcuits and/or poles does your switch have on the back of it. thanks for the help Mo-tarded

I am not done yet but where I am headed is as follows:

Purchased following parts for a 05 KTM 625SMC to graft onto my berg
1) Key ignition assembly - comes with keyed alike new core for steering stem lock
2) New speedo bracket as it has integrated support bracket for key ignition
3) Run/Stop and Start cluster for right hand bar to replace 'cheezy' Berg start button

I like the unit from #3 as it permits the throttle cables to be routed on the back side of the handle bar while still allowing access to both buttons on the cluster.

I need to take Simon's info and the various wiring diagrams and sort through how I am going to integrate these new pieces so that the key interrupts all electrical circuits on my street tard.

Work is currently getting in the way of this project - but I will post when I have it sorted out.

Mark

My switch has loads as it came from a Triumph and I used it because it was lying around in my garage.

If you go to any motorcycle accessories place they will always have a variety of pattern replacement ignition switches and they should be able to tell you now many poles. On the berg you only really need one which is to open the circuit to earth with the orange wire. Or you can, as you mention and as I did two to cut the red/green circuit from stator to ignition.

Cheers,
Simon
