i've just read all 8 pages and i used to say that i needed .048" gap. but did i have a disorted plate in there? becuase i only needed .030" time?

just a thought?

Yes, the bike is new, 12 hours now. But I would assume that tinkering with and installing the auto clutch might void something.. :roll:

but I really do not suspect any damaged parts or debris interfering with the shifting due to the fact that when I put the oem clutch back in everything worked fine, shifted as good as the day I brought it home.

Strange for certain as be it automatic or manual an engaged clutch is just that "engaged".

Dale forgive my ignorance, but can you explain to me why this would make a difference with the shifting? I know that when the clutch is engaged the bike will be difficult to upshift, but I was under the impression that when you backed off the throttle (with the auto clutch) the rpms would drop enough to dis engage the clutch, much like pulling in the lever. when the rekluse unit was installed it did not matter if I "helped" with the lever or not it would not up shift without great encouragement. but with the oem unit back in it shifts great...

If you wait for the engine rpm to drop low enough to allow even minimal slipping during an upshift the engine will be so far out of the power delivery range that said shift will have been in vain.

The Auto clutch applies much more force in the normal engine operating range then that of the OEM and as such makes loaded shifting a bit more difficult.

The symptoms will lessen over time, however, such is as a result of the dovetail shift dogs being worn back.

Hence the auto kill.

Well I installed a recluse on my '05 fe550 and this thread has been a huge help. My initial set up is the same as bergers.
2" wave spring(the tall one)
1.5" wave spring
1ea 2" washer
15t/c and 15 ss balls
and the bevelle washer
installation gap .030" (3 recluse plates)
I've only run it in a bit up and down the street but it shifts smooth, does not drag and only seems to slip a slight bit. I had problems with the kick start shaft unwinding and had to open the bike back up to fix the spring.(did a search and found great instructions from taffy) and then I messed up the waterpump seal on re-assembly (did another search and found great info from husabutt, joeusa, & and sandskipper) So for now I'm going to ride it a while and get to work on my left hand rear brake set up.

I had kick start shaft problems too. I wish I had read this BEFORE starting the install, but live and learn, and this thread and site helped me find and fix the problem. At least I was able to prevent messing up the waterpump seal. My mechanicially gifted friend, who reversed my screw-ups, has forbidden me from anything more complicated than a valve check. I'm not sure he trusts me to reset the valves if they're off. :D

Since you and I basically have the same bike and i had so much trouble with mine, when i attempt to install again do you mind if i pick your brain a bit... I will be re-reading this topic many times in the next few days.
