Husaberg won't start! Bad spark

Hi everyone, I am now almost at the point of getting rid of my 2002 FE 650 berg to get a newer version or possibly going 2-stroke again.

It just won't start, not even fire a bang everynow and then. I even rode it down a long slope in different gears but it wont even make a sound.

It all began with that I did the usual service and changed the oil and filter. After that I cleaned it up good with the powerwasher at a good distance, even sprayed it with WD40 everywhere around the electrical bits and bobs.

I then set out on my 6 hour road trip to the last event of the year (and my first).

At arrival I changed the tires in the rain and then got myself ready to get onto the track. Then the horrible fact occured that I had forgot the key to the igniton switch at home. As I did not know what to do I cracked the key switch in panic with a screwdriver.

But it just wouldn't start. Removed the spark plug and found out that it had a spark, but it was bad, really bad.

The tough that the key switch broke compleltley crossed my mind as I got the tip to connect the orange with the red/white wires togheter.

I did that and got a slight better spark but still bad and it still wouldn't fire!

I have checked the fuel, the carberuator is completely clean and it gives nice showers of gas-mixture out of the sparkplug hole when I kick it over without the sparkplug in.

Anyone has any ideas what could have happened? Has my sem given up?

I tried reading the owners doc but couldn't figure out what and how to measure the ignition system. Have I connected the key switch cables wrong?

Hi,

Disconnect the orange wire from the coil this will hot wire the ignition try for spark now and make sure the black wire from the coil is well grounded.
If still no improvement test the resistance between black red 3000 black green 165 Ohms,
if this tests OK test the output voltage when kicking it over black red 30 to 34 vac this is the crucial voltage for a good spark.

Sparks

It had 2710 Ohm between black and red. 164 Ohm between black and green, haven't come around to measure the VAC yet I'l do that in an hour or so, If it reads around 35VAC could it be wroing with the ignition anyway?

Hi,

I presume that you disconnected the orange wire at the coil and still no go, 2700 Ohms is the lower limit of what they quote as being a good stator. If you are getting a spark even though it might be weak then your cdi come coil will be ok. experience tells me it will be your stator that has finally failed. If you require it rewinding the cost including return post will be 190 Euros.

Sparks.

I think my dad did that, as it turns out he didn't :? I tried with the orange wire out and it gave a much more decent spark, I hope it's enough.

But still, since the it only reads 2710ohms I probably need rewinding. PM me your(?) adress so I can send the stator down if it's a no go anyway.

My multimeter instrument was crap, didn't handle to measure the VAC so I will have to buy a new more expensive one.

Without the orange wire you can't kill the bike without pulling the spark plug. It's for testing purposes only.

I have sent the cdi and stator to a guy that has worked at the SEM factory before and he measured it all up and found that there is no problem whit either the cdi or the stator.

Anyone could think of another problem? It has great spark as I disconnected the orange wire but it wouldn't even pop/fire when I kick it over.

Could the battery or something cause the spark to fire at a wrong point? I have a hard time beliving that the key in the flywheel should have broken because the flywheel nut is so tight.

Your timing may be off, yes. Did you check the timing mark through the inspection hole?

Doesn't I need stroboscope lamp for that? Isn't the range of adjustment on the stator a litte bit to small for making the timing so much off that it doesn't even pop in the engine?

I have tried to turn the stator back and forth between testing to see if it made any differance but nothing happend.

Hi teodor 1,

Just because you see a spark at the plug with it on the cylinder head does't mean you have a spark under compression.
when your friend tested the ignition did he run it up on a test rig and take various voltage readings I wonder!.
They say you need to pull a spark 7mm out side the head to make sure it will spark at 0.8mm in side the head. My guess is that you are down on source coil voltage.
Let me me know how you get on with the 7mm spark test.

I did try to get spark outside the head from the sparkplug and it would make a spark from up to 10mm. As the guy worked at the SEM factory before he did run it on a test rig he claims, the spark even fired at the right time he said. I have no reason to doubt him as he also sells stators and why would he lie if he can make profit on selling a stator to me?

You don't have any idea's to what it might be? Thanks for the help

OK,

Check the timing as LeFrog suggested, it may of sheared the woodruff key. If that is OK then it is either mechanical or carburation. Without being there it is hard to why it will not run, all I can do is to speculate what your problem my be.
Do you know the history of the bike and how well did it run when it was running?.

Download the videos, one shows how to adjust timing by rotating the stator left or right.

Are you also sure you are kicking it right? Are you priming it?
