AM fuel pump parts sourcing problems

Sharing my fuel pump parts woes in hopes someone else may have an easier time than I did. My initial failure was due to a bad Fuel Pressure regulator. (pressure test was only 5psi & immediately dumped the pressure so the diaphragm was blown dumping the fuel back to the tank)
Since my bike is an 09 FE 450 with original pump, I thought it’s be a good time to just freshen the fuel system up, sent the injector off for a disassembly/cleaning, figured I’d throw filters & a pump at it while it’s apart.

A recent order from Quantum ended up being a bit more of a struggle than it should have been. That caused me to learn a bit about the fuel pump availabilities on the 70 degree bikes.

Initially the price for the Quantum pump makes it pretty enticing, I ordered this kit. QFS OEM Replacement In-Tank EFI Fuel Pump w/ Regulator, Tank Seal, Genuine Mahle Filter, Strainer, HFP-389-U2R4TF3 (highflowfuel.com) But you’ll see how this plays out.
1: After ordering, I found that the fuel pump kits from Quantum do not have the correct sized fuel tube. (supplied with 1 corrugated clear 8mm ID to 9mm ID & 220MM length)
  • The 9mm ID is too large & the 220mm length is too long for our application fuel filter crimp would slip off under pressure.
  • Need 2 8mm x 8mm x 160mm hoses, 1 from pump to filter, I from filter to fuel supply nipple. (well get to those measurements later),
  • The fuel filter is really too long for a reasonable fit. It should be the Mahle KL 97 style. They do sell the KL 97 filter, just not listed under our bikes. (their assembly below comes with a knockoff version of the KL 97, but it is the same dimensions)
2: The Fuel hose variety pack that is listed under our bikes doesn’t include a single hose that fits. Not a single 8mm to 8mm hose
  • Unfortunately for me, the hose size issue wasn’t something I figured out until I’d cut the old hoses off to put the fuel supply nipple on…
  • When I called Quantum support, Ivan told me they don’t provide the lines separate of the pump kits, they just get these sent in from overseas. My only resolution at that point would be to buy the pump assembly (jumping from $99.98 to $159.98) (the hose kit that didn’t work was $39.98)
  • They warrantied the pump kit & the hose variety pack since they had no other option than selling the pump assembly.
3: When the pump assembly came in, the fuel supply nipple ring was 1MM to small & would not hit the catches of the coupling.
  • The OEM ring is 11mm, Quantum’s measures 10mm, so once under pressure, it would have just separated. (pics attached, can't really see too well inside the coupling, but the fingers don't catch the ring)
  • I called Quantum back & talked with Jr, he initially told me they’d warranty it but, essentially tough luck, I now have a dead horse (my original assembly is cut apart so I couldn’t just go back to the regulator replacement). They have nothing to help me with the hoses. Obviously I was frustrated & didn’t let him off the phone. He eventually agreed to reach out to the overseas MFG, but that it would likely take a week.
After this call I was a bit lost on what to do, but I found a cheap caliper set (I’m away from my good tools) & found the collar of the pump, filter, & fuel nipple all measure @ 7.5mm. outer gripping edge of the barb, measures 8.5mm. this would make sense for the 8mm corrugated fuel hose, (also known as 5/16” or 0.315”). The overall length of the 2 hoses needed is the same, roughly 6 ¼”(so 6.300” or 160mm would work, they’re close enough).

Digging around online I found a few places to get the right hose. Holly Performance best price I found was from Summit, but doesn’t come with clamps. Holley 12-733 Holley In-Tank Fuel Lines | Summit Racing $5.36 when I looked.
Found them for around $20 on Amazon with clamps.
But then low & behold, I found the hoses on Quantum’s site (only in clear, not black, but I don’t care) QFS 8mm x 8mm Clear/Black Corrugated Flex Hose Fuel Line & Clamps (Clear or Black) (highflowfuel.com) $8.98 each
Called Quantum back got Jr who is sending out that hose under warranty, unfortunately I’ll have to cut apart the assembly to put the OEM fuel supply nipple on it to get it going, but at least it will go.

The other problem is that I’ve spent more than I should have to get this assembly that I didn’t need. If they’d have known their products, I could have just gotten a couple 8mmx8mmx160mm hoses & been done with it.
End result to me should have been $99.98 for the pump kit $ 2 hoses @ 8.98ea = $117.94 instead of the $159 they upsold me to that didn’t work & am now cutting apart.
(also a heads up, the pump assembly doesn’t come with the rubber tank seal, so if you can’t or don’t want to re-use yours, count on ordering that.)

Short end of this is the following parts to be aware of that I could find. If any of you have a line on others please post them. I just wasn’t able to find much on this bike when I was searching.

(if you’re going the Quantum route, & wanting to “freshen up” the whole tank system, most reasonable is to buy Husqvarna / KTM / Husaberg 07-22 Fuel Pump | FREE SHIPPING | HFP-389-U2R4TF3 | QFS (highflowfuel.com) + 2 of QFS 8mm x 8mm Clear/Black Corrugated Flex Hose Fuel Line & Clamps (Clear or Black) (highflowfuel.com) @ 160mm with clamps)

Fuel pump: OEM# not provided
Quantum Product Result (highflowfuel.com) (the barrel shaped screen is the only 1 you’ll need. The fuel pressure regulators listed on their website are correct, none of the filters that show in the kits for this bike are right)
CA Cycleworks FP-HUS (ca-cycleworks.com) (they sell a kit with the right hoses, but have to buy regulator/filter separate)
TacoMoto Fuel System – Taco Moto Co.
AllBallsRacing 47-2036 | All Balls Racing (I question this kit since the picture for 1 doesn’t show the right prefilter. 2 the supplied corrugated hose would be too long & put the filter in an odd placement. 3 puts a rubber in-tank hose that would put stress on that end of the filter nipple)

Corrugated hose: OEM# not provided

6.5" Fuel Hose, 5/16" on Both Ends with Hose Clamps (ca-cycleworks.com) ($5.25/hose, but no clamps)
Holley 12-733 Holley In-Tank Fuel Lines | Summit Racing ($5.36/hose, but no clamps)
QFS 8mm x 8mm Clear/Black Corrugated Flex Hose Fuel Line & Clamps (Clear or Black) (highflowfuel.com) (the 160mm length) was $8.98 with clamps/hose

Filter: OEM# 81207090000 (OE# contains filter, prefilter, clamps)

Regulator: OEM# not provided
Tacomoto PRESSURE REGULATOR by TACO MOTO CO. – Taco Moto Co.
Quantum QFS EFI Fuel Pressure Regulator for KTM / Husqvarna / Husaberg / GASGAS Dirt Bike / Offroad - OEM Replacement, HFP-PR28 - Quantum Fuel Systems (highflowfuel.com)
CA Fuel Pressure Regulator, 3.5 Bar Rating (ca-cycleworks.com)

Crimp clamps: 11.3mm or 7/16” (PEX clamps, Oetiker seems to be to go to brand, used in the OEM assembly)
Tank Seal: OEM# 75007089000 (OEM comes with both tank seals, pump side & regulator side)
Fuel Injector service.
I also swapped out the plastic male end of the fuel line quick disconnect with the metal version (OEM# 77707010000) (about $14 when I bought it) so I could fit the inline microfilter (OEM# 78141013190) (I had a few of these in my Husqvarna spares)

Anyways, my apologies if these problems are laid out already, I tried to search but didn’t come up with anything to help me with the fuel hose problem, then the fuel supply nipple... if you all have any other suppliers to add, please do, anything else, be nice to have 1 spot to find it all for someone else. I’d think pump problems are pretty common these days on these bikes (aside from the 1’s that plagued them right off the bat)
