if this was true then it wouldn't be a 10W

I appreciate the impute and explanation. I didn’t see you really mention anything about brand. My current problem is that I had some guy put in an unknown oil and over flowed the machine (causing a smoking problem and problem with the start up/electric start). So I need to take out oil, add some of the correct oil (and shake it up a little/run it a little) and do an oil change (resulting in the correct oil). But right now it’s winter in CT, and I’ll ride the bike here and there. Sounds like I should do frequent oil changes like 10-15-20hrs, which can be reasonable depending on price, an oil change really isn’t that much effort if you have the oil on hand.The oil is the most important part of a husa bike.Whatever oil brand you use think ..... the manual says only full synthetic oil . A lot of oil changes will save your engine ( 5 at summer -10 at winter hours ) .American oil brands use additives european brands cant by the law . There is not a european oil better than known usa oil . Search it and you will see . Never use on husa oil over 50 weight . The tolerences of this engine does not made for a 60 weight oil .The oil pump its very weak for this oil weight and the starter gears are much worst . All engine makers cars or bikes agree about the cold start makes the 90% of the wear in the engine . Dont comfused with ktm dealers oils . They reccomend everythig have in their shops . Ktm Its a different animal .AND THINK VERY CAREFULLY CHEAP OIL = VERY VERY EXPENSINE ENGINE REBUILD ............ IF YOU FIND PARTS .

TL;DR, is there a brand suggestion for USA *brands*, and what should I use to do a clean out of the old oil and run in the winder? Does brand matter?

Yes this is the right oil as the manual says . Dont forgett husa sold in all the world countries .Husa engineers the didnot knew where it goes. So they said 5w-40 below 0 c and 10w-50 over 0 c . Heviar oil is not for husa tolarances .Will ruin starter gears , cylinder and head will have more wear.I use 10w-40 at winter ( 8-20 c) and 10w-50 over 25c.Greece have not 1c never.You can use 5w-40 or 10w-40 .Dont use 0w-40 because you will have not the right oil pressure.It does seem odd that for an engine designed by engineers who live in a climate where 1°C is "just another normal day" that they would recommend 10/W50.
Would you recommend 5W/40 fully synthetic or something else (for 1°C)?
I can leave home at 10:00 AM, and it's 1°C. By 3:00 PM its 13°C.
