Gear selector "shifting shaft" spring snapped...

Hi,

So I was riding along and went to shift down a gear. As I do, I hear a metallic clunk and my gear lever goes limp and won't reset itself. Manage to get to where I was going and turn the bike off for 5 mins. Go to try and start it again to get home and the E starter is just whining. Tried the kickstart and it was completely locked up. Whatever had snapped had gotten lodged somewhere. Fast forward, I've taken the side cover off and can see the problem, the spring that goes around the shifting shaft has snapped and a piece of it has gotten stuck and caused the engine to lock up.

What would cause this to snap like that? Is it just wear or possibly something else? Also Taffy if you see this, would it be possible to buy this single spring instead of the full assembly in the image attached?

Thanks

That's probably my best bet, can't find the same return spring anywhere else. How would I go about buying this from you?

Thanks
