That is an older head, I can see where the seat is so close to the
water.
I wounder if the larger valve heads 37mm vs 35mm would have
more material in those areas?

Cheers spanner
I have only fiddled with 01-03 heads. I think those casting are identical in between the year models. As I think I mentioned in a mail to you, when we tried to enlarge the recesses for the intake valve seats, after 0,5mm we could see into the water jacket on 90 degrees of the circumference... That head had propably suffered from a core being out of place in the casting process! But other heads also seem to have little material in that region.

I wanted to thank you again for the videos! gold!! I thought I had seen them all but discovered a couple I had missed - very interesting (and thank you for your patience and answers to some questioms the other day related to EFI which are already in the earliest videos)

one question - as I understood it, the Cannondale engine lives or lived on as a 450 - which make? I couldn't quite make out or recognize it from the video (first or second video I think)
You are welcome, Tourist! Glad to hear you found some interesting stuff in them!

The engine was originally designed by Folan (Lars Nilsson) on order from Cannondale. I'm not sure about exactly how Folan was ripped off in the process, but there was no deal with Cannondale, nor production. Then the drawings turned up at Highland, and they produced a couple of 450´s until their owner was killed in an airplane crash in the US. After that Highland was scattered.

That's a non-understanding stingy neighbour!
My machinist has large saw, so when I want to "dismember" (!) somebo... something, I know the where to go!

Assembly with the old type piston/sleeve to test if the modifications to the cooling system (new coolers, connected in parallell with each other) will improve flow and capacity.

The new lifters and welded/ground cams with "running-in-grease".

Happy Easter everyone!

Todays efforts resulted in a coolant expansion tank. I got me a magnifying glass to mount inside my welding helmet. So much easier to have some control over the welding pool!

brilliant idea with the mag glass, i'll tell my half blind panel beater neighbor with the beef saw, perhaps he will be grateful enough to spare me some diced bullocks ribs :D

I agree husabelg the skill with that kind of creation is in creating a weld seam capable of retaining fluids, something i haven't always been able to achieve particularly with fuel containers :D

Good welds! especially being done with a magnifying glass:eek:, the sun must be a lot stronger than I thought in Sweden:):):)

I doubt normal grade alu will withstand that chemical substance...

A very close cousin;)

I am trying to track down a head gasket to confirm
the actual stud pitch, hard to find one online.

The 4 minute test run revealed an internal cooling water leakage into the oil. After dismantling the engine, I saw the valve buckets were already showing signs of wear. I believe the repaired cams were welded with a filler material not compatible with the lifters... So, now I have chased down new lifters and on Monday I'll be sending them to get DLC-coated. It's a dog's life in the thumper business...

Absolutely! Very interesting theories! Not so much when it hits you in the face just a month before first race...

:/

but she'll be back together in time, right?

very interesting stuff, not to sound sycophantic but it's very educational ... also the part with the air bubbles' journey was very Attenborough :)

fascinating to see the bike start! this couch potato gave a cheer and shook a fist!

Wiser people are telling me that if the valve buckets are polished, the DLC coating will be better... It better be true!
