Check the auto decomp stopper

Just a message to owners of models up to 2008,
Ive had 3 instances recently of the stopper on the camshaft sprocket which the counter weight for the auto decompressor rests on whilst the engine is running dislodging from the sprocket and dropping into the motor. One was on my own 2007 650 FE which luckily I found wedged in behind the head bolt after I decided to strip down for a rebuild, the other a 550 2006 got caught in the cam sprocket and snapped the chain bending valves damaged piston and tensioner guides. Then this week another 650 FE 06 was replacing the decomp spring and noticed the stopper was loose and about to fall out.
This part is pressed into the sprocket unlike the KTM which it was moulded into the sprocket after the early 2001 models had a allen bolt and nut fall out.
Some early Husabergs run the Allen bolt and nut and you must check the tension.
I have been spot welding the back of this stopper on all the bikes now for insurance. I will post some pictures later

with a new spring and this small cheap modification you can get the old clack, clack, clack sound on start up which is the sound of the counterweight hitting the stopper at low revs and tells you it is actually working. The old LC4 KTM engine made this sound. If no clack sound your spring is too soft and the counterweight is engaged to early and the the auto decompression system is not functioning and the starter clutch will throw out on the compression stroke. This mod takes a bit of time and a $2 bolt from a bolt shop.

Exactly the symptoms on my 06 650
my 05 550 is fine
What spring are you using?
Or is just a new stock spring

just the stock spring, there may be other fixes out there but this was something I did when I had nothing else to do and it worked.
