Just found out from the ex-Husaberg dealer that I got the bike from that the bike is a Malcolm Smith Edition FC501! :)

I will be talking to Alexander Smith (Malcolm's son) on Monday to gather info on the bike.

This could explain the upside down Noleen valved forks and the Ohlins shock.....

Hopefully my other parts will be in next week!

Thanks bushmechanic.

It has sat in a warehouse since 05. I am excited to get it back in the dirt after the mild restoration I am wanting to do.

Fe 501 1990

Hi Husaberg riders,

I am,at the moment, overhauling a Husaberg FE 501 from 1990.
This bike i tested in 1990 and was very impressed by it's performance.
At that time i was used to ride a Husqvarna TE 510 l.c.wich wasn't a bad bike either.
The husby i am restoring is totaly stock and complete just the speedo is missing, and the plastic is completely faded because the bike was left in the sun.
But the engine has run only 2400 km (aprox 1500mls) opened it but closed it because it is in good condition.
At the moment the rear shock,Ohlins and forks, W.P.are rebuild.

fc 499

Hi Jason maybe i can help you out with a picture off a FC 499 from 1992 wich is the same as the1991model.
I have a brochure of the 1992 models wich i will scan and post it but it will take few days!
Your VIN number is F. fourstroke C. cross 499. CC so i think yours is a MX 499.
Does your bike have the 4 speed gearbox? If it does its the MX 499 if not, maybe its a hybrid ???
I will dig in my archive if i can find some more about this type and year of Berg. :)

Thanks rens bos,

Any pictures help. The vin has FC in it and the ex-dealer thought it may be an FX. Was FX made using FC frame??? I don't have bike available to check the trans, but I believe it is a 6 spd???

Ex-dealer also said it was a Malcolm Smith Edition bike with special graphics and??? Really would like those pics and specs. Bike has Ohlins shock which I thought was supposed to be a WP and has Noleen modded WP forks, but not sure what the forks really are yet.

I have call into Malcolm Smith Motorsports, but have so far gotten no where with specific info on this apparently special model. I was also told this was a US only model????

Hi Jason,

Well i think the MSR edition is not well known in Europe, i will send you a copy off the brochure to let you make a choice for the graphics.
As for the rear shock,by the time KTM took over Husaberg wich was in 1996 or 1997 then the W.P. shock was installed because W.P.is also a daughter company of KTM,back in 1989 Husaberg also wanted to install a Ohlins fork,to keep the bike Swedish, butt it was to expensive so they go for the W.P.instead.

Good Luck with the resto of the FC 499

We will keep in touch,

Thanks rens bos!

That special edition version sure is an elusive creature!

Just left another message with Malcolm Smith Motorsports for info. This time I left my email, so maybe that will work.

Hi Jason,

How is the FC 501 going? and have MSR already replied?

Is the bike running again?

Grtz Rens

Hi,

Waiting on timing chain and the bike will be in running condition. MSR has never replied back after 4 attempts in 7 weeks. I figured I would wait till bike is running and start bugging them/Alexander Smith again for details. As soon as I get her running I will post more updates.

Thanks,

Jason
