Hi there, first post and looking forward to learning a thing or two, hopefully contributing too!
Been snooping through some great info, entertaining arguments and the helpful owners doc (which is still index hacked since the other day) for a few months and now purchased an 05 fs650. Always wanted one of these or a husky 570smr and am happy I chose this :D

Have attached a photo of the LHS cylinder head as there is an M5 or 6 bolt I am concerned with, it is leaking oil from there when riding but it wont tighten up. It seems it is supposed to have a captive nut on the other side which may no longer be, well.....captive. Even the parts manual doesn't list this bolt as existing?

And me, I'm a lab-tech/toolmaker at Deakin University in Australia and looking to do the usual bit of road riding / bit of track work with the Berg. Bike is starting and running really well, only thing I'm noticing is extreme vibration at mid to high RPM, I'm talking hard to hang on. Not sure if this could be incorrect balancer timing or something. Even the husky 570smr I've ridden felt smooth compared to this.

Has a few little issues
*Raucous "straight cut" gear noise from LHS of engine (possible old vs new gear dimension incompatibility?)
*Had to mill the rocker covers flat to get a more even seal on the gaskets to stop leaks
*Starter sprauge starting to slip very occasionally
*Leaking oil from crankcase vent rubber joiner or dowels it seems
*Getting close to 60hrs so will be giving it a strip soon for a few internal mods to be safe.
Looking forward to getting this beast sorted and enjoying some hours on it

this bolt has indeed a nut on the other end, you have to take the rocker box of to get to it.
This bolt holds the timing chain tensioner blade.

Thanks Force, that'll be it, I best be tightening that one then!
 
if you want to, try removing the gear in the sprague known as the freewheel and then kickstart the bike. you should then get no noise. if so you must then buy the correct freewheel.

you must find the old nut. it's no joke!

no need to machine rocker inspection caps just stick 50% in the vice and whack with a soft hammer.

FWIW the nut is not captive and mine often leaks around that bolt, needs a new alloy washer

If I know its tight enough and it still leaks I degrease the bolt/head and put RTV silicone on it.

you can just about eliminate blowby by running the cases under a vacuum, you can put a high speed air valve over the breather or add a second reed valve to the LHS case.

there are part numbers for the NAPA valves and there is a picture toward the end of the second reed valve on my bike in this thread.

hammering a valve cap "flat" ? 8O 8O nothing wrong with a sheet of glass and some sandpaper.. just MHO

you put half in the vice and give it a tap with a "soft headed hammer".

if you insist on posting up how Dodgy you are out in the Pratt St garden shed with a hammer or an impact driver I'll be here to point it out and I quite enjoy the opportunity so if you want me to "shut up" you know what to do :wink:

ok lets get our wee wees out just for giggles my trades are; fitter and turner, diesel fitter and fully qualified mechanical engineer, if you want to bash tiny bits of alloy into submission out the back in your Pratt St ******shire garden shed cause you can't machine anything by yourself that's fine with me.

as you know the latest version of my homemade hybrid head gaskets don't leak, FWIW we're being totally immature which is kinda fun however you're loosing more customers by the minute! the thing is though i can't fault your enthusiasm sir! :D :D it is truly inspiring :cheers: :cheers:
 
RGL the vibration your talking about is that worst at about 7500rpm + ?

mine was the same, you might want to play with the balance factor and of course check the counterbalancer is still in place.

Thanks, plenty of tips here! I fly cut the covers on the mill and they have come up pretty good, will go exploring soon for the missing nut when I get a chance. Yes bushmechanic, vibration would be up around the 7.5K mark so will be checking first if the balancer exists, by check balance factor I guess you mean check balancer timing?

Seems the Taff vs Bushy fiasco has become quite the norm around here, i'm an on the fence kind of guy so it's just light entertainment. Your both switched on guys though, just getting a kick out of it I reckon :tongue:

rgl: the nut prolly isn't missing. it's a locknut that more than likely wasn't tightened to spec. if it was missing, the screw would have fallen out with an accompanying loud crunch sound as the slipper fell into the gears. the time to get to it would be when you can easily move it in and out.

Please try and keep an even head on it. I know he complains A LOT behind the scenes about every post on this site that he doesn't like, don't let him get to you.

Taffy no I don't want you to go out of business, I want you to pull your finger out, if you're doing that successfully then good for you. if you're not a qualified mechanic or a registered/insured/licensed business though then what you are doing in your shed is in most countries illegal. if I was vindictive sod, I'd look into it further but as I wrote no it is not my intention to harm your business rather to get you to take more care with product QC and provide a better service to the site members, if "what I'm doing" is working then that's great for everyone. The cams are now "improved" and BTW have you have started sending engine parts out properly packaged in protective padding yet?

Most of your business to Aussies? why not the UK? is that because most of the engines you built locally were soooo good? mostly parts to Aust customers? KTM has made it difficult to get parts from the USA and our parts prices are very high locally also You don't sell valves anymore or the failing soft re weld cams so it is little wonder if you noticed an improvement.

RGL sorry for the Ranting, I'll stop there as Taffy won't even read most of it. its important to some of us that that the guy who whinges to the mods all the time doesn't get to bully his way into manipulating site content.

the nut won't be lost IMHO as I wrote earlier and as Ned said it will be on the end of the bolt, you could tighten it and or replace the alloy washer where its leaking. Re balance I meant changing the balance factor of the crank itself, there are some scanned copies of "tuning for speed" in the gallery "weed" that explain how to do it.

I'm a fully qualified mechanic with City and Guilds accreditation and passed both exams with an 'advanced' score. I road raced for 14 years, I'm also a qualified panel beater sprayer. I got 'O' levels at Metalwork and Maths (of relevance).

I've had a couple of engines go wrong in 4 years of rebuilding and they were by my mechanics. I personally have not had a problem at all. I have nobody unhappy with the physical work Taffmeisters has done; might not like other things but nothing is unresolved to an approved result bikewise.

Benmoto didn't like his bill, the other guy reckoned I did too much work on his bike and grasstrackpete was a con artist who got a free engine rebuild out of me!

you are not responsible for the new cams. as I stated at the time, i had only sold cams and not CFBs so the jury was out. for you that wasn't good enough and you claim that if it wasn't for you I'd still be selling the same cam.

wrong! work was always in progress but people were coming to me with standard cams that were knackered as well and having the problem. so I had a confusing picture. you're not my judge either so you are not all knowing because I'm in the middle and still don't know!

due to you I was forced to give in meekly to every single person without question as you were on a McCarthiat witch hunt. it seemed prudent to let every claim go even though some people were running the cams off centre and other questionable results.

the valves: I can't afford them. slow movers and I need to buy $2,000aus at a time. for your information I've had my premises Gated and Fenced this year as well as full motor traders insurance and an office made of an outbuilding in an effort to expand. this causes cashflow problems because you're not in control of when things happen.

I send the parts out cheaply and have only lost two parcels to Turkey and one to France (If i recall correctly) in 3 years of parts trading. because I re-use jiffy bags, bubble-wrap, package small and light I offer brilliant postal rates.

I've just been quoted $80 for a X-bushing from the USA and a further $80 to post it here. If I was to send that to the states it would be £4/$6 first class post with proof of posting. $6 versus $80?

that's why I do a lot business to Australia as well: I work out the postage to the bare minimum. I SAVE PEOPLE MONEY. OK?

If i really wanted to harm your business I would start my own.. think about it.

as to the rest of your last post "holy crap" ... is an understatement ! basically you've admitted that I stopped you from selling failing cams and stopped you ripping people off. how does that harm your business :roll:

Cheers Ned, happily no loud crunches or sunken slipper, all tightened back up now, sealed as bushie suggested with a dab of RTV. the nut has a stub on it which rests on a small perch for load spreading it seems.

Is good to see everything is looking tidy in here, no visible scratches or heavy wear, just the usual lightly "polished" loaded areas and passed the fingernail surface test.

Will look at trying Taff's dual valve spring mod I think, those are some pretty harsh profile cams, little rectangles! and anything to ease the load in this area would seem beneficial.

RGL there are some more aggressive cams available see attached pic. "hammer of thor" :twisted:

I have the DVSK you mention, in my engine it increased the seated pressure on the valve, I made thin shims to put under the springs in place of the thick ones to reduce the pressure. the vendor had some made up later and made available as a retrofit I don't know if he still sends them out, in any case I found that the thin shims would grip fine on the valve spring but not in the head and the slipping action there produced alloy flakes. I have since re-cut the valve seats and replaced the oem valves with KW intakes and TW exhausts, being longer the thicker washers supplied with the kit were needed. they appear to be simple soft steel washers from a hardware store and the springs chew them up. metallurgy is a tricky thing with sliding surfaces.

FWIW there is a set of OEM KTM DVS that will fit, I have posted up the the part numbers before, if you search for Dual valve springs KTM and user Faust I believe they also come up.

this All just info shared FWIW and not meant as a cheap shot, attack, jibe, business building or destroying mission or to contribute to any form of pissmatch :? I'm not sure how it comes across, I have tried to be as non pissy as possible.
