Hi Big Blue,

thanks for the clarification. Guess I´ll have to go the ECU remap route to improve the fuel mixture.

Anybody out there got the ´´User Tool¨ for doing your own ECU mapping mods or uploads?

Ok guys...It's my turn. I'm installing the 70 degree subframe tank today. I'm all torn down and I wrapped the end of the electrical going to the smog "chamber" on the left side of the bike. I understand the one vent is from the gas cap...the other hose looks like it goes to the head...what do I do with that hose? Cap it, pull it, ??

I have to admit I've never gone this deep into any of my bikes to date so I don't want to mess this up, especially after spending all the money and time.

Also, there is a rattle in the new tank...sounds like a flake of plastic in there. What should I do about that? I don't want to crack into the tank and then risk a leak but leaving it seems like asking for trouble too.

Ok, any help appreciated here. I'm determined and I'm sure it will all work out right in the end but this is kinda on the edge for me mechanically so far...I guess this is how you learn though.

Thanks!!

I just installed the 70 degree sub frame tank today and came across the same question as BlueDevil... Did you ever figure out what to do with the other hose that goes to the head? Also, once I finished installing the tank and filled it up, and then stood up the bike, gas came out of my vent line. Not too much, but certainly more than a few drops. It left about a foot wide circle of gas on my garage floor... Is this normal?

As for the rattle, my tank also had a good sized chunk of plastic and quite a bit of plastic shavings. I basically unscrewed the fill cap and shook it like crazy for a long time to get some stuff out (like when you lose a guitar pick inside a guitar). From there, I put electrical tape (sticky side out) on my finger, put my finger in the fill hose, and shook some more to get more chunks out. Finally, I filled it with gas and shook like crazy, emptied it (straining it with a sock at the end of a funnel) and repeated a number of times...

@Dual Rider - good call on the extra flushing...I didn't do that...I did the "sticky finger" and got a bunch of stuff out until I couldn't hear anything else rattling in there and just got it installed yesterday. As for the vent lines...I just capped them off and left them there, zip tied to nearby electrical and used rescue tape to seal off the electrical plug end. My thought is that some day I'm going to have to smog this bike so I better be ready to revert back to the stock setup in a pinch.

Now I haven't filled up fully yet since I"m waiting on my suspension so I'll tell you what happens to me but I'd ask John at 70degree (or Dale for that matter) if you should expect this...maybe you filled it to the max and it was just a bit too much? do you get spillage when you ride too? I don't like the sounds of that.

Keep us posted and I'll do the same.

@BlueDevil - I still haven't started, much less ridden the bike since installing the tank yesterday and I have an email into John at 70 Degree Racing regarding the fuel spill issue. As for the extra hose that went to the head, I decided to remove the hose completely (now it can be my emergency siphon hose in my pack) as well as the brass fitting in the head and my plan is to replace the brass fitting with a bolt once I buy one tomorrow hopefully along with a brass washer if I can find one... This appears to be what people are doing on KTM EXC's. Here is a link to pictures, note step number 7, 8, 9, 10, 23, and 24... It sure looks like the same thing to me... I'll let you know how this works!

I'm really hoping this all works because I'm going on a 4 day riding / camping trip in two days and have a lot to get done before that...

Thanks Dual...last question maybe...when you route the vent line, you break/cut the subframe mounting bracket so you can expose the vent nipple on the new tank...from there to the back of the air intake hole how did you route that line? Do you have a picture? Did you cut any of the ribbing on the bottom of the seat? I was going to go from the nipple straight over to the left side of the bike, behind the ECU, then bend past the seat hold down catch and zip tie to the stock fuel line as they show in the instructions...or you could go more direct and go straight from the air box to along the right side of the subframe bracket and into the nipple...just wondering what you did there. Also, when you said gas flowed out, which line did it flow from and where did you have it routed?

Appreciate the input as I'm getting ready to wrap mine back up and don't want any issues. Just like you, I'm shooting for a multi-day ride shortly after all this so I want to get it right.

Sorry for the delayed response, but I have been out riding and camping for the last 4 days. Besides not being able to start the bike one day and having to jump start it (which I won't clog this thread up with the details of, and just asked for help on in a different more appropriate thread...), everything else worked great including the new sub frame tank, which really helped ease my mind on one long day of riding with no gas around! My buddies were on reserve and fumes by the time we made it back to camp...

To answer your question about the routing of the vent line, I ran it directly from where you break off the tab of the subframe mounting bracket down the right side of the bike under the seat (yes, I did remove the rib on that side almost completely just to make sure it didn't get pinched) and down the seat hold down catch and zip tied it to the stock fuel line as they show in the instructions. From there, I routed it up and under the left side of the main tank to avoid getting it too close to the hot pipe on the right side.

Here is the number one tip you should pay attention to that I'm embarrassed how long it took me to figure out as the logic is so basic... When you mount the T fitting that connects your sub frame vent tube with the stock vent tube, make sure that you put the T fitting/adaptor as high as possible, because if this is lower than the gas level in your main tank, it will leak due to plain and simple gravity... This is what was causing my leak, which was then coming out of the vent tube any time I filled up or leaned the bike causing gas in the main tank to be higher than the T fitting... To fix this, I actually ended up mouting mine on top of the tank and then used a Husaberg fuel tank cap vent on top of that. I'm going to try and attach a picture of this, but this will be my first picture, so no guarantees on if I can get this to work... Good luck and have a great ride!

Thanks for the reply Dual Rider! I haven't cut my tank breather line yet just for that reason. Makes perfect sense. I also did NOT cut the seat rib out but might just do that to make sure, as you said, that it won't pinch. So far my only gripe is that you really lose the handles under the seat with the new tank...you can barely get your fingers in there now. I was wondering about the "tugger" straps but where to mount them is the next question, to the new bolts at the far rear of the plastic subframe mounting bracket where the new allen counter sink bolts are tied...not sure i want to do the lifting from the new tank. Wat thinking of just wrapping a strap under the handle part of the subframe bracket farther forward...I'm definitely going to need something for yanking this beast around on hills or whenever stuck.

I just got my suspension back today so tomorrow is the first day I'll have it all back together and running. I'm going to do several short trips before I test her on a middle of nowhere mission...can't wait for the California rains to come...hopefully in October!!

All the best,
J

We are getting a bit off topic here, but let me know what you figure out for the lifting straps. I'm thinking of the same type of options you mention, but haven't figured anything out quite yet that I love...
